I'd be interested but you will need to sort out a site with the relevant permissions before collecting names I would think? I'm afraid I don't know of any sites so can't help on that front but good luck with the search and let us know if you get lucky?
All the best
Mav
ps..Sherwood forest by the Major Oak would be nice :D

sounds like a good idea - try the scout sites as they arent afraid to let you do your stuff and you can practise teaching anyone else on site.
cant remember the name but the derby site is used to strange visitors, when we christmas camped it we had a mixture of viking and samuri warriors running about.
I'd be interested as long as it's not more than three hrs away :)
Drum hill Derby are a scout camp that hire themselves out sometimes. We might end up sharing with LARPers which is the samari warriors and vikings that crazy dave mentioned, which would be some serious laugh.
I am up for a it.

I would be really interested but i may be more of a hindrance. i have only camped a couple of times but would be keen to learn anything you could show me and could provide refreshments
i'm always up for a meet, shifts depending

I live near to drum hill and have asked a few times if they will have a meet or just to let me camp but no joy when fire was mentioned. A fresh request might be a good idea tho. It a great site with loads of Birch, Oak, Sweet Chestnut.
Failing that Im up for a meet anywhere as long as im not out of action.:)

some sites dont like fires around the pitches. not because of fire dangers but because the kids wreck the woodland. some will allow altar fires but all have a campfire circle which can be used instead for practise and cooking. if you volunteer to built a campfire and join in the sing song then you can have some fun. other leaders like to learn as well so will often invite you for a brew and a play with the kids( in a not yellow card go to prison kind of way) :)
I imagine a large city site like drum hill has a large throughput so has to rely on donated lumber from skip companies to keep the campfires going.
we had similar issues in york

 They have altar fires built on site. I think there something about the ecology that ground fires can't happen, but then that is common the midlands, with either moor, peat or coal.

What about Birch Hill Plantation (Scarcliffe Woods), i'm sure they're into bushcraft! Hardly any facilities but nice woodland

Dukes Covert nr Grantham was good! From what i remember, Shacklewell Hollow on the Rutland/Lincs Border near Stamford was really good, nice woodland, and the warden, Derek, is very keen on it being used by backwoodsmen/bushcrafters. Been driving past it for 5 years lately and never see any1 go in or out really. so not over used. Birch Hill Plantation (Scarcliffe Woods) is a maybe i would have thought, think thats Chesterfield. Stonepit wood in Gotham near loughborough is a very back to basics site. that might work!

i contacted the warden for spitewinter campsite a little while ago with a view to camping there myself, apparently they're more than willing to hire the site out to more or less anyone. i went there quite a few times as a cub and scout and it's a good site. i don't know about lighting lots of individual fires but there's a large fire area with seating, much like a lot of scout sites. i don't know the situation with fire wood but i remember as a scout there always being lots of scrap timber in big heaps, i guess they had some kind deal with local builders/joiners. there's a pretty good pub across the road and that's pretty much it for a mile or so in any direction.
i think it'd make a great site for a meet, although i am biased as it's within walking distance of home! just thought i'd make the suggestion.
cheers

p.s. if you hadn't already guessed i'd be up for a meet!

Went to the Harley Riders of Great Britain Rally there last August. Brill place. Well set up but a serious lack of food. BBQ and fire area quite big though. Loads of standing dead wood when we were there. Just not allowed to chop anything down
may have seen you there then as i work at walesby now. the food bit wasnt up to us was the rally organisers. it was a realy good weekend .
I live in worksop also. Walesby would be good, i have camped there a few times when i was in the cadets and it is within walking distance so if something could be arranged i would be more than willing to come,

we don't seem to be getting very far with this, but there does seem to be some interest so, to get things moving along a bit, i've just booked spitewinter http://chesterfielddistrictscouts.org .uk/?page_id=16 campsite for three nights, 9th,10th,11th of april. it's £2.50 per person per night, it'd be nice to have some company for the weekend, anyone fancy it?
i shall leave it with all you wonderful people to get back to me.

ok people, sorry i've not posted for a while, i've been busy with real life.
looks like interest is growing a little, which is nice. i had been hoping to get over to rough close last weekend and speak to some of you in person but ended up going to the outdoor show on the sunday rather than the saturday so couldn't manage to get there. looks like i missed out on a southern fried treat!
right, hammocks, i'm not sure, it's a hell of a long time since i've been to the site (i believe i was in cubs the last time i camped there!) to be honest i'm going to take a little tent as well as my usual basha/bivi bag set up just to be on the safe side.
postcode, dunno mate, i'll get back to you on that one.
nearest train station, i'd guess at chesterfield or possibly matlock, i'd have thought that chesterfield would be better, if for no other reason than that's where i am so i should be able to arrange to get you from the station. i don't drive myself but my mate will be giving me a lift up and probably coming up to see us in the day, so i'm sure he'd be able to pick you up from the station and nip you over. if not, it's only 15-20 minutes by car so i'm sure someone who does drive wouldn't mind coming over and getting you.

i'm just about to drop off the booking form/deposit etc. i've put the arrival time down as 12noon, so any time from then onwards would be absolutely fine. i'm planning on arriving either with or at the same time as martink9 and nolightweight which should be well before half four. so there'll be probably be a brew on waiting for you both you lucky men!
on the subject of brews, when i went up to the site last week i wasn't massively impressed by the woodpile, it seemed to be mainly saturated chippings. i don't know whether or not there was any other firewood on site, or whether there's any posibility of scourcing any locally or not (there's virtually no dead wood left on the trees, it's been scoured for many years by the looks) so it'd probably make sense to try and take at least some fuel with us. i've got a bit at home but the winter's been pretty long and hard and i've more or less used up, i shall bring what i can but SWMBO may take umbrage if we steal the whole woodpile and she can't make a fire at home, she feels the cold bless her!

just a thought, what we gonna do about food? group effort? it seems a bit silly cooking individually when there's only five of us and IMO it's as easy to cook for five as one. so.....thoughts? i'd quite like to make a chilli, maybe put it together on friday night ready to eat on saturday, that way i can leave it to mature a bit, it makes all the difference to a good chilli. any objections to a chilli? vegeterians? moralists? religious types(it's got pork in it)? non-chilli eating wimps?
any other thoughts people?

Bugger, Ive just packed all the food I need, and I dont think I can carry anything else. But if you let me know what to bring for ingredients by tomorrow morning Ill get what I can and struggle somehow. Got to admit, a chilli sounds nice. Ill be bringing 3/4 bottle of sloe gin as well. Its about a year old and about time it was drank by us lot i think.
Ill get a bag of rice and some chilli beans just in case.

just looking at the site availability in june for our next meet and the first and second weekends (4th-6th and 11th-13th) are free at the moment. obviously i shall heed avice given and confer with various folks to try and avoid any clash between meets before i book this. also, due to the nature of the site and in light of the, so far, wonderful relationship we've struck up with the site staff i'm going to limit this next meet to 20 people. i feel that, at least for the time being, this is the best way to safeguard our use of this facility, hope i'm not out of line at all.
once i've got some dates worked out i'll start a new thread for the next meet so please be aware that any list of names started in this thread is going to be forgotten when the new thread starts, i've got to do it that way to be fair.
cheers
stuart
