Well I am getting withdrawal symptoms since I stopped doing Group Buys. So I am now working on something that was mentioned a long time ago. Won't say anymore yet as I have some more research to do. Two things I would like to know from you all.
Firstly what sort of hammock do you have?
Secondly, as there are now 198 of you with underblankets and 31 with quilts. Are you all satisfied with the product?
I want this next product to be better than the others, thats why I need your informed feedback.
Yes, I know there was a thread about feedback before but I want your latest thoughts.

Hi Ian
just to let you know I am very satisfied with the underblanket which I have used allthrough the winter, and it has certainly cured my hammock bladder. I have only used the quilt on its own on one occasion and it kept me warm all night. However I have used it on more than one occasion to supplement my sleeping bag on the colder nights which it did really well. The combination has allowed me to be comfortable in my hammock all winter including the recent snow we had, thanks yet again for all the hard work you put in, looking forward to new developments ?

I've got the quilt and the underblanket, both superb bits of kit. I've found it warm enough down here when overnighting on the bank, which is handy because trying to get out of a hammock and a sleeping bag combo to land a fish at 3am when your half asleep was a little tricky, whereas the quilt can be thrown to one side as I stumble bleary eyed onto the bank. I do use woolen undies though.

It also doubles as a nice cosy wrap as I sit watching the water of a daytime.

Magikelly Hammock

The Underblanket is superb, a revelation infact.
A good night's sleep is guarenteed with one of these.
Didn't go for the quilt.
Not so sure that if that such a good decision.

Very interested to hear about the new project.
Can't wait for more info.

I have a DD travel with a home made underblanket and a sleeping bag for over the top. If I can get another wool blanket, I'll be using two wool blankets :)

3 GB hammocks from early group buys.
I use homemade pods as I simply can't afford to buy the quilts and underblankets to go with all 3 for the rest of the tribe.
Very interested in your project though.

I use a RM eco sleep system (got it for free!) and have used it from sub zero to jungle conditions with no quilt or underblanket, just a tapered self inflating mat and a sleeping bag to suit the conditions.
Never yet had a bad nights sleep in it that was not caused by excess booze!

DD Travel with Kathmandu 3x2.5m (I think) Ripstop Tarp. Thinking of going canvas tho.
I liked the underblanket for ease of entry/exit and used a 3season type down sleeping bag like a quilt, but I was ending up getting inside the bag to keep warm this winter, so back to termarest and -20 something North Face bag, and no underblanket.
Prob just me tho as not as fit as I was and I find I get colder easer, which SHMBO laughs at after all the years of taking the P##S out of her 4 layers inside a warm house.

I use the DD Travel and though I have a 3x2 and a 3x3 DD tarps I mostly use my Hex-fly as it's noticeably lighter.

I also have a home-made insulated hammock/under-blanket but it's too heavy and bulky to use for all but near car camping.

I missed all of the group buys and bought my Wanderinstar under-blanket and quilt from Woodland Edge, they've kept me warm on several trips out already. I love the unrestricted feeling of the quilt though if I were to make one change it would be to increase the width by about 6 inches.

The only thing I'd add to my set-up is a weather-shield, a single layer of DWR fabric to make a shell around my hammock, or at the least to keep the bottom of the underblanket dry as I've noticed it getting a little damp from spray in heavy rain.

I've been considering the same thing.

I was thinking of adding something like silnylon to the bottom of the bug net to protect the underquilt from spray.

I use as follows:

MK hammocks x 2 for the wife and kids
Paradise double (much bigger comfier than the MK but twice price) x 1 for me

1 x USMC 3m x 3m cammo tarp
1 x Tatonka 3m x 3m SOTP group buy tarp
1 x MOD Basha

2 x underblankets BCUK group buy

The only reason I didn't buy the quilts x 2 was the size, I'm a big guy and sleep on my side in a hammock, they would have to have been much bigger for me I'm afraid, plus I'd use them as sleeping quilts when not hammocking.

I use a DD camping hammock, with home made Undeblanket(Gortex Outer, fleece inner) & Quilt(modded army summer bag+with cotton covering) , also a dutch army bag for the colder nights and a GB mossie net. All this under a Tatonka PC 3mx3m.

The underblanket made me want to sleep in the hammock again after I stopped. It's very good.

I use an Hennesy with the underblanket and the quilt, at Smartys meet in cornwall i had to use a 4 season bag and the quilt!, my camp buddy Shocks was using the underblanket system on his mosquito hammock along with a decent bag, niether of us had any problems sleeping, even in the cold, we did have a a snifter or two though.

mk group buy hammock
group buy underblanket
nanok -10 bag

love the group buy underblanket, found it a lot more comfortable in the hammock when i ditched the sleep mat, like the cosy feeling when the hammock wrapps around, was toastie at the december middlemud meet using the blanket, but felt the cold on the last one, i don't blame the kit though as i was ill for the following week with a chest infection, felt a bit rough on the last night so appologies if i was a bit quite round the fire.....think i'v got off topic....blanket excellent if a bit bulky to carry, especially with the added bulk of the nanok bag but don't mind that if i'm warm :)

If I'm guessing correctly what your next project is Ian, I think it will depend on the length of everyone's hammock. Or even if it was designed around a standard toploader like the group buy ones, which aren't too expensive.

I have a magikelly hammock which I love. I had some good zzzs out in the woods this afternoon as it happens.

I made my own underblanket from a Snugpak Softie 9 so my feedback comes from that POV.

I was put off the group buy ones by the weight and expense. I reduced weight by making mine only cover the pressure areas (shoulders to thighs) along the same principles as a 3/4 thermarest. It is also only wide enough to cover these areas and doesn't cocoon as far around the sides as the GB one appears to in the pictures.

I've slept out a few nights well below freezing using this with a -5C Ajungilak Kompakt bag and it works nicely but only weighs about 800g.

Thought you might like to consider this.

I've also got the RM Eco system. I've had it about 4 years now, it's not the cheapeast but I'm very pleased with it, the tapes are plenty log enough and easy to undo your knots from, and the internal pockets are very useful.

Combined with the Wanderinstar's group buy under blanket it's superb.

MK hammock and the GB underblanket used with one of my many sleeping bags! The only thing i would consider changing on the Underblanket is to add a draw cord to either end so that you can bunch the end of the underblanket around the hammock. I often feel a slight draft from the ends, nothing bad but it would be eliminatred with a draw cord. Apart from that, it's a great bit of kit. I have two systems using them, one for me and one for the kids when i take one of them along. Therefore, i need the larger tarp at some stage so that we can both get underneath!

Mk and Hennesy. Decent, encompassing, insulation that still gives access to the Hennesy would be a great thing.

I too have a range of hammocks:

Army surplus hammock / stretcher
DD Travel (mk1 version)
Hennessey Deluxe
MK

Decorum

I have recently got an 'undercover & underpad' for my HH. This fits below the normal set-up to fit in the insulation (some included, but allows for more) whilst maintaining a way to get in & out.

I've managed to get it up to fit it & 'play' with, but as yet have not had a suitable opportunity to really put it to test.

The good thing is that you can pull the underpad (the insulation) out and the undercover stays on inside the snakeskins.

Hope this helps.

MK group buy hammock.
Underblanket and quilt from group buy.

Didn't have a chance to try them out until last weekend, which happens to be my first ever camping with hammock.
Had an excellent nights sleep.
Very pleased indeed with everything.

.....I have recently got an 'undercover & underpad' for my HH.....
I've been tempted by this set-up too (possibly with the addition of the overcover) - but if something that was fairly adaptable to multiple systems came along I'd (probably) bite the hand off at the shoulder; especially if it could still be used when I have to descend to ground level. :D I don't ask for much do I? :D

I have the Mosquito Jungle Hammock http://www.mosquitohammock.com/junglehammock.html
brilliant kit,but use the 3x3 tatonka tarp,as of yet I dont have the underblanket or quilt but would be very interested in purchasing if they came up again,as getting in and out of the sleeping bag is a nightmare now, lol, due to a back problem.

Just ordered my first hammock: Tom Claytor's Jungle Hammock, http://www.mosquitohammock.com/junglehammock.html .
Might be interested in buying something like the underblanket if I get cold with a closed cell pad or alpkit airic under me...

I have a Paradise Hammock. (http://www.paradisehammocks.co.uk/shop/double-size-hammock-in-dark-green-silver-green-p-31.html?zenid=be16c24849006b35 52d83a32711aacfc) It is very much like the ones Magikelly gets and was the one he got himself originally before finding a cheaper supplier. The Paradise ones are a wee bit longer and I think a wee bit wider but other than that, they are identical. I have two in fact, one for me and one for my grandson. We are very happy with them.

I have one that I got from Andy Wood at Bushcraft Expeditions which is, I believe, something like the British Army ones. It's very good: comfortable (aren't they all?), strong (don't they have to be?) and light.

I also have a Hennessey - can't remember which one - but it doesn't get selected as often as Woodie's version.

How about a doubled over BA Poncho underslung?

Moskito Traveller, GB underblanket and a bright orange and yellow from the same manufacture as MagiKelly's Group Buy which I got dirt cheap in an end so season sale at a French Suppermarket a year or two before MK first GB. I was so tempted to get one of his just for the fact that the colours are more muted.

That said bright orange is a lot easier to find if you have had one or ten to many around the campfire ;)

Thank you everyone. That has been most helpful. If you go to Group Buys, you will see my reason for asking the question.
