Looks like the welsh assembly government have bowed to the farming lobby and want to go ahead with badger culling - on the scientific basis that 'they can't think of anything else to do'.

See http://new.wales.gov.uk/news/presreleasearchive/2131604/?lang=en

Whilst I understand the problem to the farming community brought about by bovine TB I think this approach is ridiculous. It is in stark contrast to what has been done successfully in Northern Ireland. A good contrary arguement is given here;

http://www.badger.org.uk/_Attachments/Resources/212_S4.pdf

The make up of the group that made the decision is as follows;

The membership of the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy Steering Group is as follows:
RSPCA Cymru, National Sheep Association, Farm Animal Welfare Council, Milk Development Council, Farmers’ Union of Wales, Dairy Development Centre, Country Land and Business Association, National Farmers Union, Welsh Local Government Association, LACORS, Welsh Lamb and Beef Promotions Ltd, Hybu Cig Cymru, Organic Centre Wales, National Beef Association, Animal Health, Meat Hygiene Service, Countryside Council for Wales, Young Farmers, Wales Environment Link.

Somewhat one sided me thinks! The Badger Trust, only organisation who specialise in the animals didn't get a seat at top table.

Sad and Daft. I was thinking about holidaying in Wales next year. Will not do that now and will write to the Welsh tourist board telling them why.

I will give that a read before I pass judgement but my initial gut reaction is some what the same as I feel about knife crime/banning knifes. A reaction which is part media based and a political shot in the dark to look as if they are trying to do something positive.
Me though I love badgers and knives, but then I don't have cattle or have been attacked by someone with a knife.
I'm sad.
