hi pignut
you get the steel from cromwell tel no 0116 2572431. grind depends on your choice scandi or concave,i personally prefer a scandi others prefer a concave.so the choice is your preference, hope it helps

How much is the steel that would be needed to make a knife? I have been trying to search for prices on the internet but can't find any.

The first time I made a nessie, I photocopied and enlarged the picture in the Nessmuk's book. From there, I modified, particularly the handle which turned out too small proportionally, for me, and then made a thin plywood pattern. Plywood is easier and cheaper to work out the shape and sizes you like best, so, you can make a few patterns at little expense. Once you've done that, you'll find it easier to do your own modifications

I think I've read somewhere that the traditional grind was fully flat with a secondary bevel to make the whole thing very thin, and light.
most of the ones I've seen have been full flat and thin to slice well
knives called Nessmuk style seem to vary quite a bit.

this is my take on a nessie, sambar horn handle, really upswept blade for skinning buffalo elk moose ect, deep scandi grind and is that sharp, will cut through any thing as only 3mm thick, also heavy enough to be a camp knife, for any chopping, only my take on it, i am thinking of putting my version up for a pass a round for other members to air there views.

Hello.
Here is a pic with measurement on the nessmuk i make. I like full convex grind on it.
