But she isnt a clothes person, so it doesnt matter all that much.

Sorting though my outdoors gear...there isnt much.

5 army long johns (got a good deal at a car boot)

1 army thermal top to match above

1 cheapo pair of waterproof trews

3 norway shirts (1 hooded)

1 army waterproof coat (good this)

assorted hats (ranging from fleece beanie to rusky fur one)

assorted gloves (leather skiing gloves, fleece thermal ones, leather army ones, the ones I seem to like the most are a simple pair of fingerless leather driving gloves)

2 ponchos

Now I need to think what to add,

Id like a base layer more sensible than cotton T shirts

would any old fleece do, or should I get a surplus one??

Surplus fleeces are one bit of kit that some folk like and others hate! Personally, I didn't get on with them at all. I used a helly hansen fleece, as did many others. i still have mine somewhere, but it is racing snake size!

For the layering system, surplus 95 combat clothing will do the job, but you'll look like a squaddie! You can get green kit though, such as lightweights which are very quick drying and cope with sparks from the fire well. Also, keep an eye out for KF shirts. It is a wool flannel shirt in khaki, hence the KF (Khaki Flannel, as opposed to Kamel Fur!), so it should have quite good insulative properties under other layers, will be spark resistant and hopefully won't stink when you've lived in it for a few days. I cannot say for sure though as I didn't get issued them as our Squadron went to the stores last when I went through training and we got the new GS shirts as the old KF shirts had run out by then!

Its all so complicated

When I went skiing as a child, clothing was simple; t shirt, thermal top, woolly jumper and skiing jacket

Now its all technical stuff.

You are full of good info on what clothes, but they are not only beyond my pocket, but beyond my imagination
