View Full Version : Yorkshire meetup ??

It has been brought up in the past but nothing`s really developed since so maybe we should put our heads together and get something sorted.

As Spamel mentioned on an earlier thread today, there seems to be an ever growing number of members from the Leeds and Sheffield area so it`s about time we got ourselves organised. Obviously the meet will be open for anyone who wants to make the trip and not just for those from round here.

I suppose a good place to start would be to firstly gauge your interest on this thread, then suggest any spots we could use for regular meetups (don`t give away exact locations though) and we`ll take it from there.

I`ll start us off then ...

My current permission would be ideal offering 40 acres of mainly pine and mixed broadleaf woodland. There are some nice birch, mature beech, oak and sycamore to name a few. There is running water on site, a stockpile of firewood and ample car parking.

I have asked the owners there views on a possible group meet and they are supposed to be getting back to me. I think one of their main gripes was insurance and liability etc but surely there are ways around that. I`ve not pushed them for a decision yet as I wouldn`t want to jepordise what I`ve already got. My initial thoughts were though that they took it quite well and seemed interested in what we get up to.

I think I`m having a night out here Saturday 2nd Feb if anyone wants to join me round the fire.

PM for details.

I tried to set up a meet, and failed, totally my fault as I couldn't commit the time to setting it up, but always willing to tag along and now I have a cheaper to run car I may be able to get to more of them lol.

as for location, can't really suggest anywhere, where I tend to go you can only get 1 or 2(max 3) people to camp so I'm not much use there either lol

I was looking at Silverwood, but cannot find out who it belongs to. besides, it is open to the public so dog crap is the order of the day, and necky kids that could do with a thick ear!

I would really like to find a decent place though, it's just finding somewhere. We really do need to sort something out. Can't have them lot across the county border having two good places and we haven't even got one!

I don't get over the border much - you know immigration problems, jabs not up to date etc, but there is a Scout camp at Brighouse that I think would suit your needs - They even have a bar supplied by a local micro brewery!

Site is Bradley Wood, details below....

I'm up for some local mini-meets/meets - unfortunately, being wet-behind-the-ears at this sort of thing, I don't know anywhere well enough to organise anything, yet..
Happy to help where I can though...

Just thought of another possible venue for you - again a Scout camp, this time near Bingley.

Our weekend commitment tends to be quite high with running courses, Robin going out to events, and stuff the kids do, but if we're free we'll come out at least for a day visit. We usually travel with some carving wood and a few spare tools ... :D

From the website this looks like a promising site. Anyone got any good Scout connections to pave the way?

It looks like there's canoeing potential nearby too...

Okay so you`ve guessed where my permission is then ...

I`ve got a good relationship with the scout group and landowner of the rest of the estate, like I said previously I`ve asked them about a group meet and they`re getting back to me.

I`ve usually gone up there solo but once or twice a couple of mates have tagged along and we`ve never had any hassle. I can probably sneak a few in (6 - 8 `ish) but any large number would risk me losing my permission at this moment in time until I`ve had confirmation.

PM if you`re up for it

Rich

spamel

Rich, get permission first. Although it sounds like a tempting offer, I wouldn't want you to lose your permission altogether. How about saying that we could do a bit of clearing up for them whilst on site?

Shewie
23-01-2008, 19:24
Yeah you`re probably right. It took me long enough to find a perm to start with so it would be daft to ruin it. I might just drop the scout group a quick email though to see how things are progressing

Don`t PM me anyone, you`re not coming

Just dropped the scout group a quick email to see how things are going.

I didn`t realise but it`s just over a month since I last spoke with them. Hopefully I should get an answer for us over the next couple of days.

There's only two sorts of people in t'world:

1) Them that's from South Yorkshire; and
2) Them that wishes they were from South Yorkshire.

You could always move over the border Scruff - you'd be eligible as an honourary Southie in about 10 years...

Just to remind everyone that North Yorkshire is the heart of the county - everywhere else is kinda peripheral... :D

All this is academic guys - There is only one colour of rose that matters - the same one that our great country uses as well!

:swordfigh

Coincidence - I think not!

spamel
25-01-2008, 15:40
The only reason they use the red one is because the white wouldn't show up on a white background! So the red was second choice, sorry to put you on a downer!

So the red was placed above white then .....:naughty: with the explicit implication that we are better, therefore placed atop of any pile ......:red: :red: :red:

Either colour is better than what the rest have :beerchug: (gotta make peace before i come over)

Count me in for a meet dates depending.

Good to have another white on board :naughty:

We might be able to take a night walk if we`re still relatively sober and see those badgers I mentioned in my first ever posts. There`s a chance of deer and fox on the way too.

Erm I'm a bit of an imposter in these parts (I was born in Papua New Guinea!!!), though my old dad is yorkshireman - he's from the east ridings.

It'd be grand to see the badgers - I'm working hard on getting a pass out. We'll see what the girls here at home say (Mrs Redcollective and the little one).

Very interested - dates and SHMBO permitting.

Before this thread turned into the battle of the roses I mentioned I was trying to get us in at my permission for a regular meetup.

Well the good news is we`ve got the green flag :red:

I suggested to the landowners that we`d start with around 8 - 12 of us and see how we get on, then look to increasing that number later depending on interest.

So let`s get some dates down for the first "Yorkshire Meet" and then find out who`s up for it.

Incase you missed the link first time round it`s here http://www.blackhillscampsite.org.uk/welcome.htm

There is an online calendar on the site so we can see when it`s quiet. I have just noticed though that there`s a fair bit of refurbishment going on over the next six months, we could either offer to help out a little or just get out of there early doors.

At the moment I`m doing call-out every three weeks so I probably won`t make it those weekends, that might change though and I can always swap with someone at work.

Okay a few dates which I think would be suitable either because I`m not on call or there`s nothing going on at the site.

Saturday 23rd February - There is stuff going on during the day but an evening meet (17:00) could be good

Saturday 1st March - nothing going on this week

Saturday 15th March - Evening meet again

Saturday 22nd March - nothing going on again

Saturday 5th April - nothing on again but a bit close to SWMBOs birthday

1st or 22nd March is best for me - 15th is the weekend of the Outdoor show at the NEC (I'm going on the Friday, but I guess some people will probably go on the weekend...?)
I wouldn't dare suggest you incur the wrath of SWMBO - you should save the brownie points for when you really need them... ;)

Last time I was up there, which was about 3 weeks ago, there was still quite a big pile in the car park area. Mainly consisting of pallets etc. If you can bring anything along then that would be great.

I`m going to try and get over there on Sunday for a bit of a bimble around so I`ll have a look at the wood pile while I`m there.

There are raised firebeds around the site but I see no reason why we can`t have a bigger, longer & warmer fire on the ground as long as we LNT. I`ve had smaller fires on the floor myself to keep warm so as long as we clean up after there won`t be a problem.

Let me know if you want a hand Eds and I`ll pop over

I have just joined the forum. TO pick up on a thread earlier on. I am a member of Bradley woods scout camp and as a rule, we don't admit the general public but I am sure that dressed up right it is something that I can help with to get some camping on site arranged. One part of the woods is really well suited to non-luxury camping.

If you are interested let me know and I will start preparations.
