View Full Version : tarp poles
I have seen tarp poles, and are they any good if there are no hanging points?
Any suggestions? :BlueTeamE

yes - string a line between the poles and hang your tarp over that ;)

I often use my walking pole or poles as tarp supports if walking or my canoe pole if canoeing - not up for the hammock though!

i bought two walking poles to use when i dont have trees or anything around to hold up my tarp. they are also handy for giving support when walking with a laden pack. i just made my first tarp there over the xmas, and got to field test it quite well (full story coming soon) they are so useful.

Decathlon tarps come with two poles, the sit under any eye. Worth it if you have a canoe or car, not walking.

I took the question to mean no hanging points (eylets / loops) on the tarp, rather than nothing to hang the tarp from...
care to clarify Kai ???

With the right knot you can suspend your own weight axially from a scaffold tube. Tarp poles really don't need to be anything other than reasobably straight, and stiff enough not to bend/buckle. Do you have a picture of the kind of pole you are looking at?

I have the telescopic tarp poles off of Cotswold outdoors which are really good, but there is no way you would want to pack them. I use them when car camping with family or friends to give a nice area to sit under outside. Good for cooking under outside too when its raining. They collapse down to about 2' long and extend to about 6'. WIth some guys set out it can create a very stiff and stable set up even in a windy and exposed location. If it gets very windy I set the tarp up with one edge to the ground against the wind and maybe drop the poles a bit (you can have them at whatever height you want within their range.
They are reasonably light, they are just quite bulky. But great to have in the back of the car.
I can't find them now on their website, not sure if they have stopped doing them...

I've got this type, if you stick the spike in to the ground the round rubber stopper gives a good surface for a tarp.

I have been very happy using nothing more advanced than walking poles, or a walking stick and a short 18in bit of hazel. There is less problem if you are wild camping and can pick your spot than there is if you are with tenters who like totally flat, clear, ground.
