We had pea soup fog here last night so I couldn't see out the window let alone the night sky. Today's pretty humid so it will probably be the same again tonight
Here's finger crossed do. We got to see the Northern Lights earlier this year which was pretty spectacular as it was so clear. I known not that unusal but I have never see it bright before.
Thanks for the heads up.
James
We had thunderstoms and rain last night but hopefully it will be a little clearer tonight.... its getting there :-)

Remember Day of the triffids! :yikes: :reloaded_
Yeah - keep one eye closed!!!
Typical. Exciting astronomical event hours away ... and for the first time on over a week, it's cloudy and raining!

It's 100 degrees here at the moment with clear skies. I'm heading out to the desert where the Space Shuttle was tested at Edward's AFB. I'm setting up a nest among the Joshua Trees, start a squaw fire for coffee and enjoying a show without commercial interuption.

No seriously do you are lucky it was fog again until 8.30pm or so and then heavy rain until 9am this morning now it's sun shine.

I was all set for a good show and as is known to happen around here because of where we are in relation to the ocean, we got overcast and drizzly skies.
Many years ago the wife and I were fortunate enough to be camping in the Sierra Mtns at about 8000ft elevation and the sight of this event was nothing short of spectacular.
Yeah Chris, tell us how it went so I can live vicariously too! First night in 10 days we had cloud cover at night!

"All I had was the clear desert air, a lightshow worthy of a millionaire; no cars, no cellphones, and commercial free: Oh wasn't it, just loverly." Night was the deep blueblack that left just enough light for the Joshua trees to look like spiky spirits of half forgotten but still powerfull native religons. Coyotes sang their songs. Metoerites fell by the hundreds, each one unique like Hell's answer to a snowflake.
Beginnign to wish I hadn't posted that link now:rolleyes:

Here is a good listing of meteor shower dates: http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/meteors/shower_list.html
Finally got to see some Saturday night. Taz, Womble and I walked into the clearing we'd parked in and stood for a few minutes getting a crick in our necks until we dashed back to get our kip-mats.
We then spent about 1/2 hour(?) tracking satellites and watching the light show against a backdrop of the milky way. Taz and I were both a bit surprised to see one meteorite going the wrong way! Guess it was a random one...
We went to the clearing about 10.30, and were out for about an hour.
At one point I glanced back at the camp site, to see a dome of orange glow coming off the fire, illuminating the area - it looked incredible.
