My brother is off to Norway in the New Year, as is usual for the Commando Brigade, and has asked me a question that I do not know the answer to. he wants to get a sleeping system that he can use from the cold of Norways' winter through to the heat of the likes of Iraq and Afghanistan. We have all seen the American sleep system that somebody posted a few weeks back and also the Snugpak SF sleeping system which comprises of two sleeping bags and my brother wants to create his own. He's got a disposable income!

Anyway, he wants a synthetic and a down bag but doesn't know which should be the inner and which the outer. Also, which rating for which bag, etc. Bear in mind the average temperature in Norway when he will be there is -40 (C or F, they are both the same) so he needs to be comfortable in that as the lowest range by using both bags. On the other hand, some of the hotter climes can go right up into the twenties and thirties, the nights can be cold though.

I was thinking that the synthetic bag should be the lower rating for use in hotter climes as it won't be suffering from damp from his sweat. Therefore, te down bag will be rated higher, but should that go inside the synthetic bag or the other way round?

Anyones thoughts and ideas are more than welcome, but if anybody has any actual experience in using a system like this in the climates I'm suggesting, please make it obvious so that I know which are thoughts and ideas and which are cast iron tried and tested experiences.

In the past, just as an afterthought, he has used a Snugpak Discovery (Softie 12) which was cold to start with but warmed up in the end and an Ajungilak bag which is issued and performed excellently, he just wants to develop his own modular system.

Good article Jared. So down inside synthetic, that's what I would have thought, if only because I think down lofts better and synthetic doesn't mind a little dampness on the outside.
