View Full Version : Crabs on a hammock
When modifying a hammock with crabs, can the fabric be gathered enough to fit on the crab, then tie the webbing/tape to the crab also ???
Had a look at some of the threads but couldn`t see any clear piccies

Yep - that's what I do and then use 5mts of Troll Ab tape at each end to tie up with. I created a loop in the middle of the tape with a simple overhand knot and threaded that onto the crab too
I left the old tapes in mine and shortened them which is what I think Pablo and Red do from the pics they've posted. My tree-hugging tapes are then just looped onto the other side of the crab.
Andy, I think I may well take your lead on that, but use my half-baked prussic idea as well.

Outing the carabiners through the ends was the first thing I did. You can see them on this picture

The answer may depend on the hammock, the DD hammocks are pretty substantial and I was struggling to stuff it all on. In the end I put about 30cm of tapes back through (what a fun job that was!) and then made it into a loop using a double fishermans.
found a photo, you can just about see the loops etc

MagiKelly: I like your prussic use, might try that out myself sometime, do you find they hold ok?
Chris: Is this similar to what you were describing in your other thread or did you intend to use your prussics more like line tensioners?
Chainsaw: The crabs I got would never fit my DD Travel either, too much fabric, hence the shortened tapes to crab to tree hugging tapes.
Andy,
Going to follow the Q3 route of my other thread (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26555) which is basically what Chainsaw is describing, then using the lengths of rope with prussics.

They hold fine. You get a tiny bit of sag from the knots tightening but the prussics do not move at all.
Personally, I make a small loop at each end and put the Krab onto that. This means you can take down the hammock without undoing the tapes tied to the tree (more space under your tarp during the day.)

Cheers guys, picked a couple of crabs up on the way home tongiht so I`ll be having a play tomorrow night with some knots.
Pablo - which knot did you use with the climbing tape attaching it to the crab,

Pablo - I'm pretty sure it was that photo that gave me the inspiration to try out crabs - thanks :D

Rich,
It's not really a knot, I just a looped the tape around the crab. i.e. folded the the tape in half, put the looped end through the crab and fed the "loose" ends of the tape through the loop.
I hope that explains it. Not easy to explain, but it should be clearer if you look closely at the pic.
Pablo.
Cheers Pablo
I actually meant the other knot with the tape running through the hammock, I`ve read somewhere that a badly chosen knot can actually reduce the strength of tape/webbing by up to 45%.
I`m only 12st wet through so I can`t really see it giving out on me in the middle of the night.

I used a double fishermens, bit of overkill but...
You can see the how to here (http://www.animatedknots.com/) I love that wee knot site :)
Cheers,
Alan
The other knot is a simple overhand knot. Certainly not a strong knot, but I'm 12 stone as well and no probs.
The one I poorly tried to describe (the one tied to the crab) is a lark's head. I really try to keep my knots simple (as you can tell).
Pablo.
Cheers Pablo
SWMBO`s dragging me out soon for a bit of chrimbo shopping so I`ll be having a play later
