Hey there, I've been waiting to get paid so I can buy some stropping leather. I was sitting at my desk thinking about it when I saw an old national geographic in the corner and remembered hearing somewhere that it was possible to strop on glossy paper. Gave it a go and it worked amazingly. Anyone here ever stropped on a glossy magazine before?

I cant say as I have. But possibly it works because of the fine kaolin clay they use to get a smooth fine surface on the papaer, maybe its like very fine emory effectively?

I used newspapers before and it also works great. It's the ink. The lead in the ink combined with another substance (I forgot the name) makes it abrasive. In Belgium a lot of newspaper publishers are using new printing techniques that are environment friendly. There's no more lead in the ink.

I'd be surprised if there was still Lead in the printing inks used in the UK, esp. since it's been removed from pretty much everything else.

I don't know about the UK, but I think they don't use lead anymore.

I'd guess my Nat. Geographic is sent from America, if that helps shed light on the ink.
