Hi all,
I was just wondering if anybody was interested in getting doing a group buy from dd hammocks. You can get any hammok or other item that you want to i.e tarp or webbing/rope.
If not many want to go for this group buy, then it won't be worth it as the postage would push the price back up again. But if there is some interest then i hopfully should get some sort of resonerbly deal of them.
I just need to know what the interest is first.
I did a thread in kit chatter asking about them and got a lot of replys from people who have them already and most of them were very positive.
And if you want to look at the site it's at :-

www.ddhammocks.com

let me know if there is any interst.

I'd be interested in a DD-hammock (the one with mozzy netting that is, can't remember if that's the DD-travel one) aswell :D - as long it's the 2007 edition (longer).

:naughty:

Its the "2008 edition" now :) - longer, finer mesh on the mozzie net, bungee cord to hold the net to the ridge line and a double zip on the mossie net. Have a look at their website.

Ok guys i've heard back form from DD today from a nice man called nick.and the deal so is as follows:-

less than 15 people...

£3 off camping....£4 off travel....£2 off tarps

more than 15 people

£4 off camping....£5 off travel....£3 off tarps

more than 25 people a much bigger deal

all deals include delivery to your door...

but if any of you live close together or are going to meet up at sometime then you could save even more. because of the saving in postage...a travel hammock costs about £5 to post...so it would just be a matter of picking who to get the delivery sent to..not shore about delivery to you ahjno, but we can sort that out easliy.
so we can go for it soon or wait to see if anyone else would like to join in it's up to you guys ...:)
p.s....as for anyone buying more than one item i'll let you know how much more you can save very shortly

Personally, I think we'd need to wait until we had a few more people but not sure how many more we're likely to get. Might be that this close to the festive season people don't want to spend, though I am still up for it and want to say thanks for organising this.

I'm still interested in a 2008 Travel and a 3x3 tarp, £6 off is still 2 - 3 pints saved ;)

diamond dave, you would like a couple of which one's(i'd like to know as i'm making a list of them).
as beer monster just put down he is going away at the end of march.so i will check to see how long it takes to get them posted to all of us...i would hate it if someone didn't get their hammock when they needed or wanted it.
good idea andy about the threshold....but i think that an end date would be better...like i wrote earlier, the more people the better and if we get lucky we might get more than 25...plus i can keep putting in new threds each day saying how long we have left....like an advent calender marking down to christmas but without the sweeties in each slot:)....also it will keep the thread at the top of the pile of and not lost on pages 2..3..4...ect.ect...
and also it will give a date to get your piggy banks emptyed for and your money sent to me...and on that note if you have sent me money and we suddley go over 15 or 25 i will return any savings that we make...

as everybody else seems to put down.....i have no connection with DD Hammocks apart from this group buy.....and no matter what the press say i haven't given any pennys to labour party for question's in parlment or for the honers list :);)

Here's a question, the description of the 2008 Travel is that it's double zipped - does anyone know if this means a zip on each side of the hammock or does it mean that it has one zip for entry to the netted section and also a zip for access between the two fabric layers?

Geuf
28-11-2007, 12:40
I'm very interested too. Still have to make up my mind though. What exactly is the diffirence between the camping and the travel hammock? just the finer netting in the travel hammock?

cheers!

andy_e
28-11-2007, 12:48
Hi Geuf, check the DD Hammocks website in sandbags first post, basically; Camping = No net, Travel = With net. The Travel is more flexible, since you can flip it over and sleep in the net free side if you're camping in area without a midge/mosquito problem.

The camping hammock doesn't have netting at all mate.

I have been using the camping hammock for a few years now, I bought it back when they cost £15 on the bay of evil, I have been quite impressed with it. It is effectively a thai hammock and I loved my thai hammock to bits.

I agree that you really should hold out until you have at least 15 hammocks to order.

Add me to the list for a travel hammock please.

28-11-2007, 15:26
andy.. i believe it is a zip handle on each side of the zip the older hammocks only had the zip handle on the outside..
Geuf..the camping dose not have a netting only the travel has the netting

have a look www.ddhammocks.com

also i did a thread in kit chatter and there is a link to pablo's video that he did on utube

Ash nearly all hammocks that use tape stretch quite a bit, an option to look at is getting static rope (like abseil rope) that has been prestretched, there is still a little give in it, but not very much.

Pablo

Here's a question, the description of the 2008 Travel is that it's double zipped - does anyone know if this means a zip on each side of the hammock or does it mean that it has one zip for entry to the netted section and also a zip for access between the two fabric layers?

The zip on the 2008 Travel hammock has two zips that meets in the middle of a single stretch of teeth (hope these are the right terms.) Each zip has two "handles" so that it can be opened on the outsde or inside. There is no closure mechanism between the two insulation layers.

The mossy net is much finer than the previous version and is a darker green. It has a number of loops (front and back) on the outside for different hanging configurations. There are also loops on the inside of the net at the same locations.

Elastic rope is supplied to hang the mossy net to a ridge line or seperate utility line and the set up comes with an additional 10m of new type of tape. This is similar to the old tape but appears more robust and less likely to stretch or fray (I've not tried it out though yet).

All in all it looks a great package.

I plan to test it and do an initial review this weekend and hope to do another video. I'll let you know when I've done it.

No connection with the company etc except that they sent me one as a thanks for doing the other set up vids.

Pablo.

Hi Pablo

Just watched the video, as usuall you covered all aspects, great to have it on as quickly thanks. with regards your comment on no closure system between the two layers, I presume it would be quite easy to sew a couple of bits of vercro in there to fix that issue?
I will have a look at doing this as soon as I receive my new 2008 model.
Thanks again.:)

I think that's what I'm going to do, but you only need to do it if you find your insulation slides out between the layers. My thermarest does probably because I wriggle about at night! :)

Try it out without it first. Your body weight might be enough to stop the thermarest or insulation sliding about.

Pablo.

also nick from dd has been looking at this thread.and would like to make everybody aware that ...i quote:-

regarding webbing stretching - thought I should let you know that from now on all our Travel Hammocks will come with 10m of new, stronger webbing attached (same as the new webbing Pablo shows in his video - although he used it for a ridge line as it was not already attached to his hammock. Something we only decided to do very recently).

Nice vid pablo, looking forward to getting my 2008! Couple things I noticed, I sleep with my head the other way, why is that? I must be weird! :D Also I tend not to bother with doing the feet end of the netting, I only do the head end, anyone else?

I pimped my old travel hammock by getting some cord locks and shock cord from this guy (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Buckles-and-Webbing-Emporium) not related, just satisfied customer blah blah. My tapes sagged a lot last time I was out and it puts a real stress on the netting but the newer tapes and shock cord should sort this out, n1 DDhammocks for listening to feedback!

well things are going along very quickly know ..and it would seem ashame to hang out this buy in a hope to try to get over 25 so i think the cut of date should be the end of january.if all payments are in everything sorted out you should be getting the hammocks and tarps in early february....mind you at the moment we have 16 people and 19 items on the list so far and at this rate we will have 25 (possibly).

@ sandbag47

What is the cost to the door of the travel at this point please?
I've lost track of the discounts available and did you say there would be more discount if you got 25 orders?

Thanks
Bodge

sandbag47
07-12-2007, 05:21
hi bodge,
you have lost count, how do you think i feel !!!.
at the moment the travel hammock is £34 .but will be £33 if we get 25 and over on orders.
and thats to your door.
and at this rate we will be over 25 very soon ( i hope:))

sandbag47
07-12-2007, 05:36
ok just so we all know the cost at the moment:-

camping.................£20
travel......................£3 4
tarp 2x3..................£21
tarp 3x3..................£25
webbing..................£7 (don't know if this will drop again but can check)

if you order 2 or more items you will save more money as it will come off the cost of
postage

when we get 25 orders another £1 will come off the cost aswell (have to check about the webbing)

if anyone wants to look at the items the site is www.ddhammocks.com

sandbag47

Webbing for single (10m) orders will have to stay at £7 but if somebody wants more than 10m dd hammocks will reduce the price - £12 for 20m, £28 for 50m (please note that it comes in 10m sections so an order of 50m comes as 5x 10m).

Hi folks,

Beer Monster posed a question whether the DDhammock could be used for ground dwelling.

I had a go today using just a couple of poles (these could be hiking poles) some tent pegs and some twine.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c269/prmaklpboo/DSC00137.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c269/prmaklpboo/DSC00136.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c269/prmaklpboo/DSC00133.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c269/prmaklpboo/DSC00141.jpg

Quite a stable set up but with the use of more twine or cord on the outer loops, it could be even more stable. Just sling a small tarp over it and you're done.

Pablo.

andy_e
15-12-2007, 17:48
Cheers for the pics Pablo, my only concern would be that you'd have to choose your site carefully or use a groundsheet as the nylon isn't waterproof. I suppose if you used a big enough sleep mat under the hammock you'd be fine too.

Andy you make a good point ..... I hadn't thought of that. A poncho underneath should solve it though.

Often thought about one of these ...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rock-Hopper-Ultra-Lite-Camping-Tent-Hammock-Combo-NEW_W0QQitemZ160190223461QQihZ 006QQcategoryZ36118QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

... don't know how good or durable they are, but I notice they mention in the description about using it as a tent on dry surfaces.

Mirius
17-12-2007, 16:49
I'd be more concerned about puncture/ damage from use on the ground, but a suitable liner of some sort under it would sort that. Something to consider if you can't be sure of finding somewhere suitable to be able to set the hammock up I suppose, which is a good thing to bear in mind.

Cheers Pablo :You_Rock_ . Good photos, and I think it'll be ideal system for my plans.

Andy you make a good point ..... I hadn't thought of that. A poncho underneath should solve it though.

For certain you would need something (poncho would be ideal) underneath the hammock in anything other than a dry weather spell, but a thermarest between the layers (as in tree dwelling) would at least keep you (if not the bottom of the hammock) dry. No problem for arid climates though.

Regarding puncture, the material is probably more robust than you think. As with pitching a tent, you would ensure the ground is clear of stones and twigs.

Perhaps, unlike us in Scotland, they've never experienced the sky-blackening plagues of midgies - it's truely biblical up here sometimes ;)

Or maybe they just like the extra protein boost from eating spiders in their sleep :lmao:

...... I live in Scotland ..... lots of midgies. Plus I intend to use it overseas in mozzie areas.

Pablo also found that the net cut down a bit on draughts at this time of year making for a marginally warmer nights sleep.

andy_e
19-12-2007, 10:13
I've also noticed that I get fewer draughts when I use it with the net up, I thought it might be because the net holds the sides of the hammock a bit higher so you get more shelter.

I already have a camping hammock, the travel hammock wasn't available when I bought it.

Both will get used, but the travel hammock was quite well explained by Andy_e, not neccesarily for use in Scotland but abroad where you are more likely to get eaten by things that bite in the night, day, morning, evening and aren't overly picky about who or where they bite.

For the extra few quid I would go for the travel if I were you you'll only upgrade in about 6 months time believe me

Don't forget you can turn the Travel hammock upside down and voila! you have a camping hammock (with netting for storage underneath).

Can I put my name down for a "Travel Hammock 2008".
Can I also pay by PayPal?
I realise this method of payment will be more expensive.

o'yes we have 36 items in the group buy now.....welcome soggy boots

As far as im aware, if your sending money from one personal paypal account to another there is no fee or percentage deducted. There's a small fee to extract less than £50 from your paypal account to your bank, but you will have over that amount and I therefore believe will not incur any fees. I'll send £55 to you now.

sandbag47
22-12-2007, 19:40

22-12-2007, 21:18
ok guys, for anyone paying by paypal , i've sort of worked it out and rounded it up to the nearest 10 (just to make sure).

£33 add on £1.40=£34.40

£55 add on £2.20=£57.20

i know it's not correct but it's a only a couple of pence off the correct amount (i think)....
cheques are alot easier than paypal and cheaper .and less of a headache

Hi Sandbag and hello to all on the forum (what a wonderfully useful resource this is!). I'm new to the forum although I've been 'guesting' the pages for quite some time reading the hammock threads. I've managed to narrow it down to 2 possibles.

The Jungle hammock (Tom Claytor's) and the DD Travel Hammock. What puts me off the Jungle hammock is that there appears to be no way to use it without having to set the mozi-mesh up as well. For lazy summer days in the garden I'm happy to just dispense with the mesh alltogether (and you mentioned you can simply flip the DD round I don't think the Junglist allows this at all?).

My only reservation is my size and weight - 6ft 1" and 15 st - If the DD is ok for that (and I kinda trust the recommendations on here) I'd like to ask if I could be added to the list for a DD Travel Hammock and a 3x3m Tarp (the monies here waiting to go - I can pay direct into your account via online thingy, send a cheque, pay you through PayPal, whatever you need.)

All the best and hello to all - Mick

Chainsaw

Mick,

I'm just over 6ft and probably kicking about 14st after all the christmas gorging :( I have a DD travel 2006 and it fits me great. The DD hammock and tarp are not lightweight items so I think you should be fine.

Welcome aboard BTW,

Cheers,

Alan

I was being slightly less altruistic in my reply 'not at all fill your boots'. I meant by all means call a halt to the list, otherwise it may never end!

Looking forward to lazing in the mid-winter murk, just ordered an alpkit self inflating mat in readiness for a cold nights slumber under the stars (or more likely drizzly clouds either way it'll be good).

These dreaded midges, anyone seen one up close? The lakes round here have a resident summer midge that I can only describe as resembling a tiny oblong, with black then cream or white alternate segments. The mozi net I use usually does the trick, but step outside and they're straight on you.

Tiny little blighters, and it feels like a pin prick when they take a bite, also for some reason the resulting bite is extremely itchy for over a week afterwards, the british mozi bites don't bother me anywhere near as bad as these do.

Again, repellents like Jungle Formula have no effect.

Don't forget to treat yourself to at least one very special beer or whatever you fancy! You've put in a lot of work.

I would feel great to visualise you sitting in your newly received hammock sipping on a cold one!;) I might even be doing exactly the same thing:naughty:

Hi SoggyBoots, don't know if you recall my setup from Middlewood but I was using my DD Travel and Woodland Edge/BCUK underblanket there.

What I tend to do is run a seperate line below my tarp ridgeline that I attach (with a couple of alpine butterfly knots) both the hammocks midge net and the outer shockcords of the underblanket to. It's also handy to hang other stuff to, e.g. my firefly bottle light or my uco lantern.

Edit: you can just about make it out here ...

LOL! Wayland and Matt kindly pointed me in the direction of a trolley on the site, it's basically just my bergen and a kit bag that I carried everything on site with and then a bag of firewood for my own cooking and the communal fire.

Though to be honest I did suffer from a bit of shiney-kit-itis when packing for that weekend :lmao:

Hi Andy
Thanks for your input!!
I saw your setup at Middlewood. It looked very organised and workable!
What I didn't see or recognise was your DD Travel Hammock, with midge net raised and, your under blanket in sleep mode.
The combination looks good and, in that case I am definitely interested in buying an underblanket.:o

I think whatever you use between the layers will be compressed and lose much of it's insulation, rollmats and thermarests excepted. Though, I have used my wool bushshirt and found that was quite warm. There have been a number of threads discussing hammock insulation/underblanket use and the consensus seems to be that it's the best solution, but not the only one. The only way to know is to give it a go and tell us how you get on, though I think you'll get better mileage from trying to attach the liner outside the hammock in the style of an underblanket.

I emailed Woodland Edge on the subject of hammock underquilts, to find out if theres any discount offered for a bulk purchase. It's £70 otherwise and that's just too much for me.

I'd be keen to find out if the poncho liner thing works out, it'd be considerably cheaper. I found a link somewhere to an american guy who'd done just that, he recommended a particular type of liner although I can't remember the details...I'll have a look.

Why are you all so enthousiastic about those hammocks being shipped?

I'm affraid of getting sea-sick in the hammock when I test it out in these winds..

Better look for big trees, otherwise with the tarp over it it'll be something like kite-camping.

I'd guess you could in an emergency, but I wouldn't recommend it - because they're lighter tarps they won't be as robust as one of those DPM bashas, so you might find them getting a bit holey...
