This is a Silver Birch or Betula pendula
Possible the most useful of all trees. The inner bark can be cooked and dried into a flour meal. The sap can be tapped and drinken, fermented, boiled down into a syrup. The leaves can be eaten raw of made into a tea.
The bark in fine powder or papery form makes a great tinder. Larger bark sections can make waterproof containers or canoe skins. Cooked in a tin a waterproof tar can be made. A good charcoal can also be made from the bark. The younf branches make very good brooms. The wood burns well when seasoned, is light and strong.
