View Full Version : Basha/Tarp Sizes and MagiKelly Hammock
Hi All,
I have found a ripstop tarp for 15 euros - however im not sure if the size will comfortably cover the Magikelly Hammocks,
Its 265cm x 175cm
Anyone have a clue ?
Don't want to get it if its not going to cover.
Thanks
Loz
Depends if you want to risk the absolute minimum or rather enjoy a good nights sleep even with more or less horizontal rain.
With what I read here at the forum, it appears that 250x300 is the minimum, with 300x350 being on the safe side.
So buying two and sewing them together might be a cheap and good option.
Thatll be 30 euros for a 350 x 275 tarp ( no including stitching, and seam sealing the joint )
That a good deal ?
I cant find them anywhere else in Ireland

Yes, IF its a decent quality of fabric and coating and IF you have someone who can really sew this lightweight fabric CORRECT with an even tension etc.
Otherwise, Tatonka generally makes good kit at acceptable prices:

You cant do wrong with one of these.
Read here, for example and I remember magikelly saying that he prefers tarps bigger than 3x3.5.

Jez,
Its all a bit steep for a bit of fabric - 60 euros !
I've just bought one of these from this vendor and I can truely say that it and the vendor (no links, etc, etc, etc) are brilliant!!

And at 3x2 I can't really see that you'd need a bigger one.

A thought did strike me the other day - what happens to old ridge tent fly sheets? I'm sure that you could get a couple of these old tents for a few £/euros and if necessary sew them together?

Mine is that size and it was fine with my mini hammock but its really too small for teh Magickelly one
Having said that I have always managed to make it work, but only after some fiddling about.
(1) Mount it diagonally. I am not a fan of tape over rope because it abrades the fabric, but you don't really have the choice as diagonally you can only use three tapes and thats not really enough in case one goes.
(2) Drip line. The hamock will still peek out under the tarp at the ends so you must use a drip line to stop water running down, but even then once teh fabric is wet it will wick down to the rest so its onto ...
(3) I use a thick bin bag with hole in the end tied over the ends of my hammock to stop the peeking out bits getting wet, but you then have to be very careful with that or it funnels water down into the middle of the hammock. The way round this is....
(4) A bit or paracord tied to the end of the hammock, through the hole in the plastic bag and then up to my utility line to make sure the bag tips away
By which time I have normally thought *** it, might as well have used my tent! Sorry I don't have a photo to show you what I mean buts its not pretty.
I am planning to buy a bigger one as soon as the pennies are available. I will keep the other one back for day trips when all I want os somewhere for a quiet brew.

The ones from our big old 6 man tents are way too big and heavey  bt you could use one from a nylon tent, if you could find it. Most small tents seem to be domes so you would have to fiddle around but I bet it could be done.

Oh yes, but it would be wasting € 30,- for two which are not sewn together correct. a bit tricky with this thin fabric.
Since at work we are moving part of the shop, I might be able to help.
We have two older 2 man dome tents laying around, which will probably be thrown away,
being wasted from exhibiting in the sun.
If you want, I will have a look at them and ask the Boss. Maybe I can cut out a bottom or a fly is still in working order. It could be yours for postage, then. € 8,60.
Alternatively, we have left some groundsheets for tents we no longer stock. It might be that you can get a big one for € 30,- incl shipping.

Rugged, but not lightweight, around 1000-1200gramm
