View Full Version : i need something cool to spend some money on

gorilla

had a little windfall a couple of weeks ago, and after clearing debts and fixing the car and decorating the kitchen and buying all the kids crimbo pressies and all the other 'sensible stuff', i now find myself with money to spend and no clear plan for spending it. that said, i consider the buying of more kit a good place to start ;)
might be a strange question, but has anyone got any suggestions for a cool bit of kit - could be £100, could be £1, but something outside the basics, as i have all that already!
it will be something i need that i don't know i need yet - all suggestions welcome, as if nothing else, it might build into a usable list
(actually, my first idea has already been done, as i have a well-known forum member making me something sharp as we speak!)
thanks all

A fridge! Now that's cool.

would this be your famous 'pine-cone powered leather fridge' eric?;)

Nah, it's the fridge I bought the missus when we was young and frisky. I used to come home at 5.00 O'Clock on the dot. At ten to five she'd open the door of the fridge and sit in it. She knew that when I came home after a hard day's work I liked to slip into something cool!

Something from Peter Atwood, http://www.atwoodknives.com/ ?

Son Of PryThings are cool, imo, though
a) don't know if Peter has any in stock.
b) Doubt its EDCable due to possibly being a fixed blade?

Recently saw these on another forum. http://www.zebralight.com/ Cool & practical

Why do you want to spend money on kit for the sake of it? If you have all the basics as you say why do you want more kit?
How about a few days on Dartmoor or a week (if you have holiday time) hiking somewhere in the lakes and practising bushcraft instead of buying kit you don't really need. Know more carry less an all that. Or spend some going on a course to learn how to do with less kit. Or just save it for when you really need something or need to replace something instead of just spending it because you've got it. :)

all good suggestions mate - a course was a thought i had, and may well be something i do. but as we all must have experienced, i have done all the sensible spending and just have the need for a little retail therapy!
most of what i have left has already been put in a savings account, and this is just to make me feel better!!

Spread the good!
Have you concidered giving a bit to a deserving cause/charity?

And (ahem) you could always get yourself some super cool Welsh Bushcrafter leather pouches.....:)

If its wasting your money that you are after then try iwantoneofthose.com. If you cant find something utterly pointless and massivly over priced on there then you won't find it anywhere. That should cure your retail therapy bug for a while.
of course you could always make yourself feel more fulfilled by getting out there and doing something exciting this weekend, learning a new skill, teaching the kids something or just going for a nice stroll in the countryside and noticing that the seasons have changed, then you could stick the cash in the rainy day fund.

Here's an idea, why not buy some leather making tools and some leather and try making something? Or perhaps a knife kit and have a go at fitting scales to a knife, if not, an entire knife? If you go the leather way as well, you could make a sheath. That way, you've spent your money, got something to show for it and have the satisfaction that you've created something.

The idea of going on a course is good if you have the time and the inclination and can find a course with spaces on.

Either that or put it away until you have more money to add to the amount and get yourself something REALLY nice!:)

Jed - leather and gear is a very good idea - i've been putting it off for a while, and the creative urge will keep me busy! like i said in the first post - i don't want to spend loads, i don't want to waste my money, i just wondered if there was a useful little item that i may need that i was unaware of!
the independant fiscal advice has been useful - but in answer to another point, i like to spend money - it's what it's for:) - i take the kids out every weekend, and spend every available penny on them - this is just about ME!!!!!!!!!!!
i thought this may lead to a thread where people post stuff that everyone else might not know about, but it seems to have morphed into an abbey national ad ;)
anyway.......off to le prevo

I gave my wife a goat (http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/ProductDetails.aspx?catalog=Un wrapped&product=OU2653) a couple of years ago.

I saw a guy blacksmithing a couple weeks back and found it fascinating. There's a bunch of videos on youtube too of guys turning old files into ornaments and some very impressive knives.
I'm not sure exactly what kit you'd buy... I'm tempted to have a go making my own forge... possibly something along those lines though?

I'd say either a Berghaus Aquafoil Hat (£17) or a Lowe Alpine Mountain cap (£30). Either way, the best bit of kit money can buy.

If the missus has any inclination to come out camping then she will be hassling you to go out camping when she first tries the tipi and stove combi out.

My missus, who HATES the cold suggested we went out back in Feb when it dropped to -5 at night and she came out the other weekend too down on Dartmoor when it dropped to 1.5. She loves the tipi. Has been one of my best investments to encouraging her into coming out all year round.

i've currently got a Montpellier 12 tent - really good for the whole tribe, with seperate rooms and all that, but i would love a tundra 8 and stove
she's inclined to camp, but not to the tune of £500-600!!!
i think i shall get money off everyone for crimbo and use it to lessen the blow!

And Mad Bear do them (just google it)

Iain,

If you are bringing the tribe to Middlewood then say no more. I'll have mine toasty warm with the stove glowing. Once the missus has a taste of the good life then she'll be mithering you for one ;)

if there's any quibble then buy the lavvu first and get the stove with any chrimbo money (obviously you will have to buy the stove now though ;))

Fair one. How about upgrading something you already have then? Like buying a rolls royce of headlamps or torch or top of the range gortex bivvy bag etc?

that's more what i'm thinking! - Dougster is making me a new knife, and i really like the old Tundra 8, but the look on the boss's face when i suggested it suggests that may take a little more work!
i do need a decent coat though...

£100 is about the minimum spend for decent binoculars.

Could also be used to kickstart a new interest, eg:

Shotg*n certificate application fee plus 2nd hand g*n cabinet (leaves no money for actual shotg*n, but you can buy used for £50 up)

Canoeing course - £100 should get you up to 2 star, maybe all or part way to 3 star.

If you're handy with wood, £175 will get you an unfinished hull from Apache canoes (special offer on Song of the Paddle)

Deer stalking course level 1 - £210
http://www.eskdalewildlife.com/training.html

A lot of good waterproof jackets around £100

A strike-a-light (for use with flint and charcloth) is a fine thing to have - £10 to £15. Available from Woodlore, but I have one by Mike Ameling which is excellent.

Victorinox Farmer off American ebay. £15

A bow (get advice first) £30 to £400

Having money and not knowing what to spend it on is a sure sign of too much money.

Id save it until something or other came up

(but then I never have enough money to worry about)
