View Full Version : New pocket knife
I loved my SAK but unfortunately have lost it :puppy_dog Not sure whether to get another one or maybe just a one bladed folder (legal) :o
Any ideas and reccomendations ?? Budget about £30
Leon
I take it you want it to be a legal slip joint? I'd suggest a look over on British Blades, I believe there is a group buy on a legal slippie at the moment.
Yes a legal slipjoint is what im after, also with a nice wooden or antler handle :D
Leon
I'd better get that jacket sorted out for you aswell! $orry about the delay, things are a bit hectic at the moment!

What is this slip joint affair chaps?
A slip joint is folder with a spring which doesn't lock (the joint slips).
What about a Sod Buster?
Have a look here on Ebay:

This is the one being discussed over on British Blades for a group buy. The blade length is under 3 inches, although it doesn't say on the auction one of the guys has the same knife and measured the blade. It is just the job and the wood looks very nice. Plus, only half the cost of your budget, and made in D2 steel which is very abrasion resistant.
This will make it a bit more difficult to sharpen in the field, but if you sharpen at home who cares! The D2 blades will apparently be fine if you regularly strop them. If you wait for it to go blunt, it'll be a pig to set right again. It's not quite stainless, but it will survive better around water than a carbon steel.
I'm sorely tempted to get one myself!
SAK Alox Farmer is my legal slippie of choice.

If it locks, it ain't legal without a good reason (and safety is NOT a good reason, apparently  )

Locks require a valid excuse to carry as an EDC.

That is a liner lock Matt, again you need to have a good excuse to carry one over a slip joint. Think of your grandads' penknife.

  ATB....Stu any non-locking penknife could be called a slip-joint :)
How about the Spyderco UK Penknife? That is a legal slip joint. Basically, most Swiss Army Knives are slip joint knives. You don't need to press a button or move a catch to be able to close the blade.

I got one of these and spent under 5 minutes with a file on the lock mechanism... it's now a stiff slip joint and legal.

pretty too...
I also got a nice little case folder at the wilderness gathering, late 1960's early 1970's and mint... again, legal.

I just noticed that... could be a result.
To make legal, undo the screw with a slotted screw driver and the top catch lifts out. File the little notch down a bit and replace.
couldn't really be easier and I guess if you wanted to, you could just remove the catch completely and keep it safe in a drawer to make a locking folder at a later date.

normal Folders ( slipjoints  ) are designed to be held open by the spring and most ive seen the spring is stronger than a lock version as the lock vrsion used the notch to help hold the blade open
i would be conserned of creating a folder witha weak spring hold more likley and more dangerous than a purpose made non locking folder .......... if you follow me :D
i would go with a SAK :D personnaly

Not great if you want to do an extended bit of carving, I found that out again just earlier on stripping bark off of two staves!

These are definatly worth considering.
Rough Rider, the top one is jigged bone and the bottom is stag antler, both genuine. Both UK EDC legal.

I called www.heinnie.com to check their stock as I wanted a Marbles slip joint. I was told that although they had stock these were better quality and better value for money. Heinnie even rated them as better quality than Case.
You wont find them on their web site as they did not want to detract from the sale of others in their range, but call and ask.
Now...the painful bit, they were both supplied and delivered for less than £20, yes both:eek: .
I did have to finnish the edges off, but are now shaving sharp and I will say that very good quality, I always have one in my EDC pouch. I did polish that awful writing off.

I have a double blade - lambsfoot and spear point as my EDC - its very "gentlemanly" somehow and quite clearly a tool not a weapon. A handmade, rosewood and brass handled knife for £20 - £30
Bargain!

Leon

Leon, the 3 1/2" is the closed length. IIRC the blade should be under 3" so fine (but measure it to be sure)
Red
Very nice Leon. Pretty much what I'd considered before I realised that I had absolutely no justification for buying another knife!
Cool, thats it then, should have the cash soon :)
Leon
Have finally got round to ordering it :D should be here soon
