Hi...

When you bushcraft, and sleep outside more than a few nights, do you like to be at the same spot all the time or move every morning??? :-)

Nomad or Hermit...?

I move every morning ..... but thats is because of the local bylaws around the brecon beacons. There are many places where you can stop off the trail but only for a single night... no long term camping allowed.

Even though I chose Hermit for the poll, I guess I am both. By preference, I travel alone and on occasion I might spend a couple of nights, even three in the same spot, but I prefer to move and explore. There is too much land here to stay in one spot for very long.

EdThanks, Ed! :super: I had now idea about that, but I'll know next time I head south ... BTW is that just the brecons or the whole county - would that apply to the Black Mountains too then?

Not too sure about the rest of the country but the Brecon Beacons National Park has designated areas where you can stay a single night..... most of these are unmarked on maps (though some bothys are on the old maps) and it helps to chat to the rangers to point you in the direction of the nearest bothy (I know of 1 but there are apparently more) or campsite..... though if they don't like the look of you expect to be told there arn't any. Some of the local tourist infomation points also have info on these sites.

Cheers - stayed down there many times but didn't know about the one night thing. So it's the National Park bylaws rather than Powys as a whole - I think the place I go most often isn't inside the park boundary. I better check that out I guess ..

Hermit all the way! I prefer to make a shelter out of natural materials than to use a basha or tent and as such a fixed woodland home is more practical than whacking up a lean-to every day... it alse saves time in the evening for other bushcrafty endeavours like foraging and carving things!

Yeah I agree. Settler isn't such a cool buschraft title.

(It's a bit like sim games where you start out in the stone age and everything's cool. Then suddenly you're all civilized and before you know it you have nuclear weapons and ... it's just no fun anymore! :?:)

Glad you can vote now Tomtom! :thumbs_up

semi nomadic I like my home here, but I get extreamly frustrated if i dont get away for a wander ever now and again.

same when I camp.

I tend to set up a base camp, and then wander out from there, sometimes staying away for a night or maybe even two depending on how long I'm away for.

I find that a lot of factors effect how long I stay in any one place (including the laws in the area), how long I have on the ground, the weather and situation. I voted nomadic because I tend to prefer longer routes rather than solitary locations

I don't like shlepping from one place to another...i like settling in one place and exploring different directions from that spot. But from now on im gonna camp alot lighter, so i may find myself wanting to move.

In an ideal world, i'd make camp for several days, and then move on to a new one. I'm a bit of both really, but I went for hermit because I like being able to explore a certain area thoroughly and returning to a central camp.

Totally agree.
God, four of us think alike at least! Scary!

Yes, absolutely (is that 5 now?). I've always liked the "swiss family robinson" style living - several permanent bushcraft shelters, moving between them.

I fall into both catogory's. I like to set up somewhere, then explore surrounding areas but I dont camp in the same area more than 1 or 2 times, then its off to explore someplace new. I have built perm. sites in a few areas to use as base camps, but usaully prefer to see new ground. what I don't want to see is other people!, I'm out there to share my time with nature and avoid other humans.

Well I had to look this one up to make sure of the meaning.

Nomad = A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land.
A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.

Hermit = A person who has withdrawn from society and lives a solitary existence; a recluse.

I'm a bit of each I suppose.

So how many can truly call themselves Hermits??
