Maybe you heard it before, but i'll post it anyway! :wink:

Daily Mail, 25. august, 1988. "The 15-year old Matteo Grillo was in 1943 eating dinner in his home at Palermo on Sicilia, when british bombers started an airattack. He ran away with his sisters and brothers, seconds before their home was destroyed. He ran into the woods and was still there 45 years later. In 1988 a photo came up of Matteo in a newspaper, and it was recognised by his sister, Rosalia, who thought that he was dead. He was presented for the modern world, but decided to continue living in his hut in the woods, where he lives together with 12 dogs, reading his bibel again and again and keeps himself going on a menu containing fruit, berries, roots, herbs and springwater."

So, what do you give me? :wink: :-D A 15-year old living in the wild woods of Sicilia in 45 years...! 8-) I believe the first 10 days were hard, because of the need of food, shelter and etc. But after the 10 first days he didn't survive any more... He lives there..! 8-) When you've been in a wood in 45 years, you live there!! :wink:

That's a very interesting story Andy. I agree with you, once you've been in a strange place for a certain amount of time your no longer trying to fight for survival your living with the land. It's all about being able to adapt to change some people may be able to do that in a day for others it may take much longer and those are the ones that die. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change that survives and that is what we must all be prepared for if ever a situation like Matteos should arise.

just look at any "survival" story and the same is true though not quite to that extent.

take the surviours of the andes plane crash, though it got gruesome and canibalism was their way out, they actually had routine, kept spirits up, and grew stronger because of it, a couple died because they refused human flesh.

the japaneese army officer on the island survived thinking that WW2 had continued fighted on, he lived on the land and beef from stolen cattle even kept his rifle and bullets in good condition by storing the bullets in oil pots he made!and was picked by his comanding officer up in 1974!

both situations involved hardship both invole healthy mental states and both cases the survivour actually managed to retain dignity and made their surroundings resonably comfortable and manageble.

i guess anyone would do the same!

if you found the surviving a challenge that was possitive then of course you would want to do it again.
thats why we enjoy Bushcraft!

it's a potentially hard way to do things without the mod cons, but we grow with it!

i heard the one about the japanees man on the island, did you know he would not believe even his own daughter that the war was over, so they had to bring his commanding officer out of retirement to tell him.

i found loads when i ran his name too.... his story in breif is here http://home.nycap.rr.com/useless/onoda/ for anyone who is interested.... thats what i call survival the story makes the long years between events like shootings happening seem very short, but he must have gaind a most intimate knolage of the island on which he was living.
