View Full Version : Alternative way of making a kuksa?

Just had a thought. Many have heard of, seen or maybe even taken part in making fire by friction on a massive scale with a huge log as the spindle and a group of people pulling on ropes instead of a bow. This will make a huge depression. Would it be a good way to get a nice smooth bowl in a kuksa? Granted, you can't do it by yourself, but it might be fun to try!

Anyone want to give it a try sometime? Take some pictures if you can please!:D

sounds interesting but on that large a scale any one got any thoughts to getting the bow to move that quick enough to get an ember

Maybe you could do something on a smaller scale by carving the drill to shape first.

Rough drawing but I hope you get the idea?

That looks like a very cunning plan! :22:

Looking at alternatives, would it be feasible to use the fire coal method and burn out the bowl area?

There was a picture of it at a previous Delamere meet somewhere, which is where I got the idea from.

Stick a bit of clay round the edge of where you are going to have the bowl. Invert it over the top of a kelly kettle. Stick a hollow stick in the air hole and blow. Remove wood after five minutes and scrape charred wood away. Repeat until desired depth is reached. Remember to slap clay on parts you don't want burned. And you get a brew as well.
