Making a axe sheath?

After some serious file and stone work I have got a razor edge on a cheap axe (an aldi special) but now the rubber edge guard is now completely inadequate and I would like to make a proper sheath.

So I have a few question:

Where can I get the leather?
What type of leather, thread should I use?
Where can I get the needles, thumb pads etc.?
Any tips?

In the future I would like to make knife sheaths so any tips that on that would also be helpful.

I know that some makers favour the bridle hide,
and the veg tan leather is favored for wet molding.
If you contact Le prevo they will send you a catalouge
which usually includes offers on offcuts :wink:

Quick suggestion (passed on from axe-swinging friends): use copper rivets, as steel ones will affect the edge of your axe.

I have a crosscut saw used for horsepacking.A saw,axe and some manner of large bucket are de riquer for trailclearing and firefighting. An excellent and cheap alternative is old firehose from your local station.
