Secret location, nah thwere called Lenabough woods there on the round about of peterhead.
They were once owned by the navy but sold them to the local community now there anyones land.

You do know that there's a lot of us in Scotland and if you post a date and a site you'll probably find yourself swamped with people. :D

Aha, my Sister-in-Law just so happens to be moving to Aberdeen today and the wife is insisting that we go and visit on a regular basis, so this will give me the oppurtunity to drop her off at her sister's and for me to go bushcrafting up your way.
Umm sounds good to me.
As long as you don't mind an englishman in your midst!

Why do you think ive gone quiet lol.
Nah ive found a great venue, funnily eough its close to me but its not because of that its be coz its massive has 2 or 3 rivers deer, rabbits a local farmer group who sell eggs and fresh milk really cheap.
And it defintly a wild camp spotthere is the occasiional dog walker or runner. But a great place all over.
If that venues ok with everyone oh its called Lenabo its an was an old raf base but closed after ww1 now its a massive forest. And when i say dear theres lotsa dear.
Its 15 miles from the asdas were i stay.
Now what about dates im thinking next year or the xmas holdiays if you dont mind the cold and rain.

Lodian, if you don't want a 'group' meet up, then might I suggest that you title the thread in such a way that that is clear?
There are a lot of small meetups around the country, not all sites are suitable for numbers, and not all meet ups are open to all-comers, many start simply by a few pms among like minded folks.
The forum is a friendly place, and widely read, invitations are usually accepted by those who can manage to come along......and it's always good to see someone else's patch.

cheers,
Toddy

i only just noticed this thread, i'm in aberdeen and i'd be up for a meet and i know a couple of other people that would also be up for this.

Lodian
07-08-2007, 21:14
Ok dokie toddie has been giving me some advice about this etc
Now date for my end is probably looking around march, or feburary. Now this place Lenabo has the land space to support alot of people but tis really gona be what you bring with you as apart from the farmer that i metnioned the nearest shop(ASDA) is 7-10 miles from the site.
Any water that you don't bring can be found in one or 2 of the streams and they will need to be puried etc.So i do advise bringing some bottled.
So understanding that thismight not be a fantastic meet could people give what month would be better march or feb and if your still intrested in going then say so, so i can gauge a rough idea.
Lodian.
(though i will go out for a day a couple of times to see if i can find some more water supply and get a better feel of the area)

Is this proposed meet to be a full BCUK Aberdeenshire Meet, with folk coming from all over the country, or just a few 'locals' going for a weekend in the woods ?
If it to be a larger meet then I suggest Back o' Bennachie as a good venue, there is ample car parking and mains water there, and the Forestry Commission allow the Scouts to run similar events there. Also it is near to Archaeolink, which would be of interest to folk who are into re-enactment and living history.
Just my 2p worth :)
Doug.

If you look in the Review section, you'll see that the FC ran a BC course locally (led by someone who's done demos at Archaeolink).
Every time I pass the Scots pine on Bennachie, I see a better pitch; so I'll second the second suggestion. Or the first.

Hi folks.

I too am interested- would like to meet like minded folks (although am new to BC).

Cheers, KP

Gave up waiting: just spent a surprisingly quiet night between two pines (once I'd re-tensioned the tarp - hindsight would have bought me a catenary instead of the Hennessy hex).
Toasty at 2°C.

andy_e
21-04-2008, 12:56
OT: Just curious, what problems did you have with the Hex?

Chance
21-04-2008, 14:11
Flappy, is all: I'd put no compliance into the guys, in the form of elastic or a weight; just four sharpened wind-falls stuck into the loam. I would have had the same problem of tension with a catenary tarp, with with less flappiness (if I believe the write-ups).
Ear plugs would have been an even cheaper solution: although the noise is more of a tiny niggle than a genuine problem. It was the first night out for a while, and I just need to get used to it.

andy_e
21-04-2008, 14:48
Ah right, cheers. Yeah, I had a similar problem first night I had mine out - didn't help that I set up in the dark either.

Since then I always try to make sure to put a lot of tension on my guy-lines and along the base-line of the tarp. I also cut my pegs on-site from windfall, I stamp them into the ground so the cord is in the dirt too.

Chance
21-04-2008, 15:04
I might try suspending a stick from the tarp:guy connection next time: a rock or a water bottle seems too much like hard work. After that, I might finally resort to the recommended rubber bands (be they bungee, knicker elastic or one of the elaborate catapult contraptions).
Or I might just learn to ignore it, like a proper roughty-toughty. Never easy, the first night.

Chance
03-05-2008, 10:29
Tried a suspended stick last night; and slept more soundly.
Could be any number of reasons: less wind, more fatigue, slightly-angled hammock or, possibly, more compliance in the tensile load path.

Having made a late attempt to catch a midsummer sunrise, I can't recommend Craigshannoch when it's breezy; unless you have a very low profile tent or bivi.
Nice views, though.

I've had various D of E expeditions based there; its a good site, now with a 'wild camping' area as well as barbeques...but no mains water; the water in the 'lavvies' is taken straight off of the hill!

Absolutely perfect for bivvying; but the kids aren't at that stage yet. Sheltered in the woods below Little Oxen Craig last weekend; couldn't handle another night of flapping.

The idea has always been to catch a midsummer sunrise, but bed has always been too comfortable.

Dingus Magee
03-06-2009, 08:13
Aye....I know that feeling! I'm full of good intentions, most evenings, to nip out of the house early next morning and shin up Craigshannoch to see the sunrise. Its a pity that the cave is north-facing; had it faced east, you could have watched the sun rise ower Mither Tap fae your bivvy. Maybe see you up there sometime.

Ray Mears did a lecture at the Music Hall Aberdeen last October.

Sadly it looks as though he's not coming north of the border with his lecture tour this year :( .
