Budget cooker

Not realy relevant with the army trangias being so cheap but when iwas a kid a real trangia was way out of my price range and all i could afford was a couple of surplus mess tins.
It served me well for years before replacing it with several trangias.
It was made from pieces of scrap aluminium and an airgun pellet tin for a burner.

The little piece of wire mesh was used with some saw dust to make it into a smoker.
Fresh smoked mackerel are pretty hard to beat for lunch when your out fishing.

Rapidboy, excellent and ingenous use of what you had :super: well thought out. I had made something similar out of tin cans but not so well built and yours is probably more efficient. Thanks for the sharing NyahWen!!!!!!

Personaly I love it :o): the fact you came up with the idea, it cooks 2ways and you made it yourself cheaply makes it more bushcrafty to my mind than any the of shop bought :super:

I made it when i was about 12 or 13 and haven't used it in years.
I found it a couple of days ago and thought i'd post some pics.
Today i was shopping and found this stuff

Is this the "greenheat" that people are talking about on here?
They had it in little 35ml sachets as well but a lot more expensive.
I thought i would try it in the little stove.
I was thinking about just filling the pellet tin ,does this stuff evaporate quickly or would i need something more airtight?
How long does a sachet burn for and how does it compare to meths for heat.
I remember using a disposable army issue stove years ago that used gel.

FYI - 1 airgun pellet tin (Accupell) filled to the brim with greenheat burns for 45mins spot on.
Works very well in this stove and no fumes so could be used in a tent or back of landy for heat source :wink:

Does it mix with meths? I was wondering if a meths/greenheat mix in a trangia would give a hotter burn?

I can't see the point myself - the idea of the greenheat is to avoid the smell ect of Meths and in some small way to be more eco-friendly.
