Well as some of you may know i am going on work experience with woodlore in 4 weeks :D
it is a self catering course and i am trying to think what i will do, i have a trangia i could use but i would like to make a cooking set up and use that instead
now this cooking set up must:
Be able to fit in a 12cm billy or if another larger container is used the billy and everything else could go in that.
it must use the trangia burner but also be able to use wood
i have a swedish army trangia, a 12 cm zebra billy, plus a garage and various tools
any ideas ?
thanks leon

Get with Wayland. He's got a very nice setup. There were some pics of it on one of the older threads. Very compact.

Leon,

You could try this combo:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c269/prmaklpboo/DSCN0207.jpg

You *could* use it as a woodstove but it might bend a bit with the heat. So cheap you could experimnet though. Also you could replace the rivets with wire. That will enable you to take the whole thing apart instead of just folding up.

Just a thought.

Hi Leon
Woolworths also do the cutlery drainer and also some containers that will fit inside billy as an extra pan

Or take your billy into Tesco and buy a tin can a bit bigger than the billy (remember to leave handle room).

Then make the hobo stove from that

If the billy will slide inside the can, make a set of holes at the top to slide 2 tent pegs through to sit the pan on. Use this when using the hobo stove with wood. Make another set so the billy sits lower in stove and just put the Trangia burner in the base of the hobo stove - no click stand required. Windshield - find some thick tin foil (pie dishes, serving platters etc.) and use a bent piece of that

woolworths do have a cutllery drainer that will do the job and morrisons have stainless steel containers that are easy to turn into billycans for £2.99.this fits snugly into the drainer.look at waylands various threads on this subject and you will get idea.
having just put together a set like this on sunday i would say it is fairly easy to do.

Ditto that.

Was gonna say exactly the same as Red Leon, if you are using a hobo stove, there is no need for a clickstand, you are just carrying duplicates. A couple of tent pegs through the hobo stove at the right height and Bob's your proverbial.

I think I have those billy's leon, if they are the same ones they are good but made of Aluminium which wont take the heat very well if one is the stove.

Just a thought:(

I've been inspired by this thread and have just made myself this:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c269/prmaklpboo/DSCN1048.jpg

You can see I also cut some disposable BBQ grill for the bottom of the stove for ventilation and so that the ashes fall through. The vent holes are at the rear of the stove. Needs a bit more refining.

I think Joker's right. It won't take sustained heat too well, but it did well enough to boil a 1 litre water in very quick time. We'll have to see if it lasts.

S orry ;) to say it might not be such a good idea, they're aluminium and fine over a wood fire so long as your carefull enough to not let them boil dry, A nice set as far as ally billys go but to actually make the stove out of one might be a bit risky.I use the small one with my homemade hoblow stove http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17516

Also be aware that the smallest one is somewhat wider than the 12cm billy you originally planned so if you try and usethe Ikea or Morrisons solutions they'll be packed inside the billy and need to be wrapped in something to stop soot and gunge getting on the inside of the billy.

Slightly reverse thinking here but if you've already go a Swedish army stove set why not just cut a stainless steel base for it to stand on ( maybe even a stainless steel fire grate to drop inside ) or at least keep it open as an idea incase you don't pull any of the other ideas off for lack of funds or time.

Actually it was your post here that set my mind onto trying to get something working with a Clikstand and wood ( as detailed here http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22041) but I'm not that optomistic it'll work yet, I'll let you know if I get a chance in the next couple of weeks.

They are copies of the "Bulldog" brand billy cans, I have a set thats over 40 years old and going strong, the intense heat of liquid fuel stoves and open fires have not affected them, a good choice, and much cheaper than zebra brand

They seemed alright when I tested them out. The fire was quite intense too, but I can only evaluate them over a period of time. Thanks for the heads up. Not sure what you mean about "risky" though.

I'm probably being a little overcautious but thinking of the ally melting/becoming pliable. Its one thing for a billy to become a little pliable but another if it's used as a firebox and supporting a pan with about a kilogram of food/water. Good to here yours is holding up though as it's a nice idea if it works over time.

Pie dish for a wind shield, trangiaburner unit as a heat source, or make a pop can stove, and four six inch nails driven into the ground to give you your pot stand. Make sure you use it on cleared ground without any grass or leaves on it and you will have no problems. All of this will fit in a large zebra billy and a folding cup, spoon and lighter and maybe a small panda pops bottle of meths. Complete basic setup for next to nowtif you have the billy and burner unit already.
