View Full Version : Which tarp?
What type of tarp are you using with your hammock set up? I have an aussie one for ground dwelling but am not convinced it is large enough for use above a conventional (magikelly) hammock?

I bought one of the Tatonka 3x3 TC tarps from the group buy.
Whilst I love it when its put up, its not the lightest thing in the world.
I'm on the hunt for a lighter one.

If I had the money, I'd buy the MacCat Deluxe

Caternary cut, comes seam sealed etc etc. Some blokes on hammockforums.net have made their own, but their sewing skills rank slightly higher than mine. I always get too excited when nearing the end of a sewing project and end up with wonky seams. Not what I want in a custom tarp!
on ebay there are various sizes of tarps from about 6 by 6 to about 12 by 18 feet, and are about £6 each lloyd

The tarp that comes with the DDhammcoks hammock.
Also a BandQ plastic one with eyeholes for £3.

3 x 4 tatonka nylon - love it... massive, lighter than the 3 x 3 TC one I had and quiet on windy nights still.
2.5 x 2.5 kathmandu tarp - packs to nothing and very good for ground dwelling... tiny bit short for hammocking though.
hennessy hex fly - love it also, leave it with my hammock but with the snake skins, during rainy days, it gives a really good dry working area and in the sun, the same.
Beware overly cheap noisy tarps
Mac cat ones look very similar to the hennessy hex fly, but more expensive. The shape of the hex fly seems like it lends its self better to hammock use. Thoughts are trending towards this one. Thanks for the input.

I'm surprised there is a not a 'maker' here as it's a relativley simple product to make.

Hennessy Hex Fly but I recommend modding the fixing loops yourself right from the start as they are IMO the only flaw in the otherwise excellent design. I stuck a thread up of how I modded mine here (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/community/showthread.php?t=20429&highlight=customisation)
