Hi all
Can anyone advise me on the best places to do camping in the Dorset area, I would like to either pitch my tent or hammock over night, but, it seems not many places to do this anymore without prior permission.
I have just recieved my long awaited reply from the Brecon Beacons parks authorities who also tell me " not without permission".
Any help would be great
Thanks

Odd. When I enquired years ago I was sent a Word document with farm campsites and at the end were two wild campsites:
Backpack sites
These are sites intended for use by individuals or small groups (of not more than 10 people) only.

On the south east side of the river, between the famous Clun-gyyn falls and Graig y Dinas, 3 miles south of Ystradfellte. No booking necessary. No Charge Max no. tents 10.
Llech Llia OS Grid Reference SN 922193
At the head of the Llia and Senni Valleys, west of Heol Senni – Ystradfellte minor road, just south of the hairpin bends. Free overnight camping by walkers allowed by the Cnewr Estate, except during lambing season 15th April – 10th May. No open fires, dogs must be on leads, organised groups must notify the national park.

What no one, um, harder then I thought then, lol
Hi I used to live down in weymouth myself, and can confirm it's a total nightmare to find places for bushcraft down there. Newforest is very very very tricky as for one centreparcs has dominated anything campingwise really so to do anything you need to get out of their general area or get mobbed by yuppies :D. The problem that leaves you then is your on common land where the locals don't like folk out scaring their livestock and possibly damaging their livelihood in land management. I spoke to a few and they all seemed to think I wanted to burn the whole place down or something.
I had mixed luck in dorset itself though. If you head up towards wareham direction via moreton, then you have a ew nice spots there. Most of it is all national trust land and all managed plantations, but bang in the middle of it (just next to B3390) is "oakers wood." It's not very big and I never managed to find out who owns it despite asking around, but I also never saw anyone in the place, and so have spent a few nights there with nothing more than very very small twigs fires. Plus a bonus is you get a fair number of owls in there and the odd deer wandering in and out from the main plantations. Watch out for the badgers and bunnies though, they can make a racket rumaging round you at night near your camp.

Well thankyou all, I see I will just have to go begging permission to use land round here and hope for the best.
Unless anyone else can add to the ideas so far?
Thanks

Anyone????
I'm bumping this as I've just moved into the area (Lytchett Matravers) and am having a similar problem finding areas to use. I'm going to join the Dorset Coppice Group and the local Mycological society as I'm guessing that's a pretty good way to find out about local woodland and who owns it!
