Hoodoo pointed me to Dangerous River a while back. It was written in 1958 by one of your own. Patterson emigrated to Canada after serving with the British Army in WW1. He homesteaded in northern Alberta in the 20's and spent two seasons on the South Nahanni River (1927, 1928). This has to be just about the best book I have ever read combining both excellent trip tale telling with excellent bush skills. I have done a review at JM's magazine. This is a book not to be missed.

I also just finished a RM Patterson Life Works review for the same magazine. It will probably be up tomorrow or the next day. Patterson's 5 books are all good reads, but Dangerous River is just superb.

I'm with you on this Schwert it is an inspiring read, you can't help but be impressed by the courage and knowledge of Patterson and his mates. I was speaking to a bloke at the weekend who canoed down the Nahanni last year, his stories just underlined that canoeing UP it was an amazing feat.

It's a must read

I have great respect for Patterson and a number of the early travelers who entered these wild areas with limited experience. Patterson's other books tell the tale of a number of these early explorers. Looking at a modern photography book by the Keough's it is easy to see that this is still a wild land.

I finished my review of the other Patterson's and it is also at JM's.
