Not to be cocky or anything, but I am glad we don't need those things... :D

Always useful to leave a copy of your route/plan with a responsible person. with ETA's
obviously don't deviate from route/plan once you set off.

What do you mean Torjus? I understand you can go where you want etc in Norway , but if you're going on a fairly long trip its always a good idea to lodge a route card with someone, even if its a rough outline.
And they're imperative if you're leading inexperienced people.
Useful link, thanks v. much.

The other thing is of course, you guys probably do need them less - because there's less of a culture of spending time outdoors here in the UK than there is in your fair country, a lot of people head out onto the hills in the wrong clothes, without adequate planning, they can't read the signs that tell them poor weather is imminent - which means they get into trouble.
Route cards are one of those things that are encouraged to make sure people stick to some sort of plan and organise their trips properly.
also useful info for routes in areas you don't know.

The Cadet forces (especially the Air Cadets) must fill these out as part of the expedition planning stage of DofE...
Even on two or three day short distance walks they can be a valuable resourse for the staff who may need to find the group as part of the supervision rules within the units.
They mean that the group can be found at any point on their route should the need arise and providing the route and times have been adhered to.
A very important and useful piece of kit, in my opinion of course...Could be a real life saver
