View Full Version : White Clawed crayfish ID
Does anyone have a link to a good Field ID for white clawed crayfish
Hi Pignut
No link I'm afraid but hope this helps the native White claw (which are protected) is noticably smaller than it's American cousin, the claws are of a uniform size on the whiteclawed but on the Signal one is always slightly larger, the signal crayfish will wave it's claws aggressively the white claw is less inclined to do this, the biggest giveaway is the name whiteclaw's have lighter coloured claws (not always white) while the signal's are always brick red. the above link should help a little if you want technical details
otherwise you could try a google image search for white clawed crayfish and red clawed crayfish.
Basically the white claw is more in poportion in its body size to claw size whereas the red has oversized claws for its body+the claws are usually a red colour of some shade
