I've seen plenty of these knives around before but I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a low budget starting option? thanks in advance all.

Try the ones from Axminster tools about a tenner iirc.

I have a couple they are fine and of acceptable quality

Hi Feygan
I recently bought a Frosts hook knife, it cost me £11.18 delivered.

Might be worth a try.

If you are on a really tight budget, have a look at farriers hoof knives. I think frost make one starting at around £2.50. Not great, and they will need alot of sharpening to get them in shape for spoon carving...... but nice and cheap.

The cheaper hoof knives, with long hours of sharpening to set up - are what I use. I've had luck even with super cheap no-name brands...

Try this http://www.astiequestrian.co.uk/trolleyed/8/86/index.htm I just ordered one and for only £2.95 it's got to be worth a shot. It's a farriers hoof knife so will need sharpening etc but is that not what we all seem to like doing anyway? :)
