View Full Version : Need hammock & tarp advice!
I know that there are oodles of threads on the subject, but...
I'm looking for a hammock! I'm 6'4" tall, so methinks it'd have to be a pretty sizeable hammock...
I saw this hammock: http://www.nomadtravel.co.uk/store/customer/product.php?productid=19578#de tailsimage
And it says that the one for folks over 6'2" is £25, which doesn't seem unreasonable to me...
Anyone vouch for the quality though?
I was also looking at US Army style hammocks... anyone know if they're any good?
Is there anything to look out for when buying a hammock, other than size? Material? If it can hold your weight and size is there really any such thing as a bad hammock?
Also, I'm looking for a tarp... I've seen numerous ones on ebay pretty damn cheap, but I'm not sure about how big it should be. I saw a 6x8ft one, a 12x9 ft one... just don't know what to go for
Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Pete
Have a look at the Magickelly Group Buy threads...the tarps are 3m square and the hammock easily big enough for you...I'm 6'1" and there's loads of spare room in the length :)
I did look at those and I'd like to buy one if there's another GB, but I really need something within the month
Basically, right now I'm looking for something that will be adequate that I can get quickly... once I've got more time and money I'll consider something more comfortable, durable etc :)
Thanks anyway though!
Pete

avoid mesh. it's uncomfortable and your stuff can fall out.
It might be worth you ringing Outdoorcode then...I think he's likely to know how to get to these quickly...... :)

Don’t rush into buying one. Or at least take time to set up any that you do buy before you have to use it.
A: because it will mean you get to learn how to set it up
and b because if you are camping and the support ropes break you are stuffed.
If you buy a cheap hammock and the ropes/strings is rubbish B&Q sell blue nylon rope by the meter, and it's more than up to the job (It will take up to 227kg)
As for tarps, it you are just looking for one to cover your “current needs” and not as a lightweight backpacking ultra-modern option, then search on ebay (uk) for “camo tarps” I bought one which was 9x12 ft, it was less than a tenner, and I fount it to be perfect for covering the hammock and all my gear, it can also double up as a groundsheet or with a bit of inventiveness serve as a basha/tent/windbreak. It’s camo on one side and plain green on the other side. all you need to add is some cheap paracord, and roberts your mother's brother.

I've posted the answer on the Loch Achray thread too but you should have a look at these.

They are the same quality as the group buy ones but slightly bigger. I am six foot 3 inches and I find these or the group buy ones very comfortable. At the moment these are on sale and you will get it for £35 including postage.

I really would rather not rush into buying one, I should've started looking ages ago, but I'm terrible for procrastination... I'll certainly take your advice and buy some of the rope from B&Q just in case though!
That was also the same tarp that I was looking at on ebay I believe  how's the folded size and weight of it?
I'll also be looking into getting some more paracord... I waste string like you wouldn't believe, but I always like to have some paracord to hand...

Nice, I'll definitely try and get one of those! If, however, I can't get it in time (which is quite possible, I'm a poor student and a smoker ) I'll definitely put it on "the list" :D
Thanks a lot folks :)
Sorry Graham_S and Falcon, almost missed your posts!

I was thinking the same thing m'self. Always looked awfully heavy, too... if I intend to carry around a big bundle of rope, then I'll take a lightweight hammock and have the rope for use as... rope! :D

Cheers mate, I'll put that on my options-list too :D
Take a look at DD hammocks on ebay too... They do a complete setup with tarp and mozzie net for about 44 quid :)
Take a look at DD hammocks on ebay too... They do a complete setup with tarp and mozzie net for about 44 quid :) the tarp is not so good, the mozzie net is more a "big fly net" and the strings supplied :banghead: plus, they are a tad on the short side, I'm 6'1" and mine only just fits
The US military hammocks are way too narrow. The only "real" one is the M1966 model. The so called Jungle Hammocks which look like a suspended tent are some cheap imitations of one made in the WWII era.
I recommend the mosquito hammock, Jungle model. It is long enough, comes with a large fly and has mosquito netting and all tie straps.

Thanks a lot folks :)
If I get stuck and am unable to take all the advice this time, I'll definitely keep it in mind when I get round to buying something more permanent :)
Cheers

Glad to see a thread like this as I am in a similar situation. From what I've heard the DD hammocks are a bit too cosy for over 6ft.

Hi! Not sure if u guys can get the Hilleberg Tarps, but if u can, get them. I've used a few different tarp's but the Hilleberg ones are the ones i like the most. The quality is GREAT. Lots of long lines. My favourite is the XP 10. The 5 is a tad to small for me.

I gave up swinging in the wind and went back to the ground. I found the struggle to get into a bag and get out of it at about four in the morning an effort and after a slight tumble. The expression 'S"d this for a game of soldiers' came to mind. You can be warmer on the ground and it stays still after a few beers as well.
It is after all just more kit to carry.
I would say borrow one and see what happens, if it floats your boat go for it, if not... back to earth with out the bump.

DD Hammocks have recently changed their line. The hammocks are much the same design as before. Net looks a bit finer, so better for midgies and noseeums.
Tarps are much better than before. Nowhere near as flimsy a material, and they've replaced the brass eyelets (... aren't they a joy after a windy weekend?) with nylons webbing loops ... much better idea.
Overall much better products than before, at much the same price.
I'm guessing Nick is going to be doing a lot of business. Nice to see a supplier listening to his users, and improving his product.

Having seen the posts indicating that the quality of the DD hammock has improved I have gone and bought one of these tarp/hammock combo's (http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DD-TRAVEL-HAMMOCK-TARP-Camping-Army-Bushcraft_W0QQitemZ32009705275 4QQihZ011QQcategoryZ36118QQtcZ photoQQcmdZViewItem) for use at the 2007 bushmoot.
I hope there will be someone there willing to show me how to set it up otherwise it could be an uncomfortable weekend  :D
im 6ft 4 and have a 12 x 9 tarp; big enough for 2 i know but you, your hammock and all your personal kit can be stored under it a well
for the hammock i only have a mesh hammock but i fit in it and though it was really really gd, but it depends wat u want it for and how many a year u will use it. my hammock on ebay was about 7 quid and the tarp about 5 quid

Hey Matt,
Theres loads of time before the moot to get out and practice, to find a rigging position that suits you. Just take it out with you on a day trip to practice the knots and get used to sitting in it and generally accepting it as part of your kit. Loads of info on www.imrisk.com

No worries,
I'm not entirely sure that there is a "Proper" way to set a hammock. After all, the only test there will ever be, is if you have a comfy nights sleep!
