Thing you are a bit muddled mate. A bivi bag is a waterproof sleeping bag cover used in place of a tent (from the term bivouac). You may be thinking of a possibles pouch (belt pouch) which is used to carry handy items in (flint, steel, few plasters, brew kit). It doesn't replace your Bergan

Mind you, judging by the size of some people's possibles pouch, you probably COULD dispense with the Bergan : )

ahhhh

so is hiking and camping sometimes named bivi bagging because u sleep rough in a bivi bag? if not, it sounds silly to call it "bivi'ing" or whatever.

Yeah, pretty much, going out walking and sleeping out without a tent is usually called bivvying.

Most times people have at least a bivvy bag, sometimes a tarp as well.

Brocktor,

I think of it like this:

Camping (usually) implies a tent
Bivyying (not sure how to spell that) implies sleeping in a temporary shelter usually rigged with materials you brought with you (a tarpaulin, bag etc.)
Shelter Building - making an A-frame, lean to etc. from materials sourced at the campsite (branches, bracken, leaf ltter etc.)

Any clearer?

bivvy bags are great. sooo much lighter than carrying tents and if you get the british army one you can fit a smallish bergen in with you, so you really don't even need a shelter either. some do come in a bag, is that what you've seen maybe?
