When I was visiting my grandparents some weeks ago I obtained an old wood drill or navar as we call it.
This kind of auger has been used here since 500-600 AD. They are made in many sizes, depending on their use.
In my part of the wood they were mainly used as boat building tools, but I`ve seen larger ones (5-6 cm diametre) used to drill holes in logs ( to fasten the chain) before hauling them out of the woods by horse.
Mine is about 30 cm long and makes a hole about 12 mm wide.

A pic of the business end. I had to touch it up a bit (sharpen) as it was rusted.

It could be useful for boring a hole in the tree when collecting birch sap, building a log house or if you just need to drill a hole in a piece wood. The drill is easy to use and cuts trough wood like it was butter (if it is properly sharpened).
A blakcsmith (if you know one) could easily make one for you.
