Well after shall i say a difficult weekend think i need a "new tent " on the KISS principal and cheap ? . It all started at cub camp trying to put up my dome style tent in a wind whilst trying to supervise 20 cubs , and answer questions at the same time , of course one of the poles snapped at the cheap metal ferule , so ended up hastly making a bivi out of a poly tarp the noise of which would have kept me awake all night, except The last one went to sleep nearer 1 am and the first woke at 5.30 so no problems and we had a spare tent with us . However i thought it would be worth getting one of those simple tents with just two poles and 8 pegs that seem to stay up and waterproof without bits to break or loose . of course i would like just a tarp but modesty and camping with kids demands more so i spotted the french two man tent in surplus and adventure for £20 looks a bargin or any other suggestions.

i have not seen this tent so i dont know what its like but if you think its ok and it costs £20 then it sounds like a bit of a bargain to me

Cubs? :You_Rock_ I do Explorers, you at least have the expectation that they are self sufficient. They are worse than beavers or course but you can always dream

Our Akela uses these see http://www.twosecondtent.co.uk/ for details. They cost under £30 from decatalon and you get two cubs happy and snug in under a minute, mind you they are a :censored: to clean if they puke! :yuck: but yes they really do go up in seconds! :Wow:

At camp we use a B&Q 7.0M X 9.0M blue plastic "tarp" tied between two trees as an HQ shelter and so far it has lasted three years although I think this may be retirement year. We have never slept under it intentionally but we do use a low BBQ in it and I have nodded off in front of it many times :o

I had a look at some of these on a scout site recently and they seem excellent. EAsy to put up and reasonably easy to pack away. They were standing up to a bit of wind when I saw some a couple of weeks ago, betterthan a lot of "proper " tents. The only downside to them is pack size really, but if you are car camping and want to set up quick, ideal.

PS zodiak, I am an explorer leader too have you checked out leaders chatter?

Sturm-Mil-tec makes a very simple/compact two man trail tent..They come in Od and US Woodland camo..I have two of them..Only problem I have w/ them is the door is small and not a lot of ventilation in the summer.......

Dunno where you would look for one in the UK though..It costs 24USD for one here..

Tents are great, and I still love sleeping under the stars in them. But lately for KISS, I've taken to snapping two army poncho's together and stringing them up under some trees. I get eaten alive by mosquitos but at least I stay reasonably dry and they don't take up much pack space.

Just my $0.02 cents!

Here is the Surplus French M1 tent that I bought (with rainfly)

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=257554#

It is a fantastic tent for the money. construction is first rate, nice extras with it. It is slightly heavy, but worth it for the price. I paid $19 (USD) for mine with the rainfly. A rainfly or tarp is a must.

I bought 3 of them because they were such a good deal. My kids play in one over the summer months in the backyard.

I had one of those about 3 years ago, they are ok, a bit heavy, and tend to "sag" in the rain though, if I remember right I paid about £35 for it.
