Hehe.

Found this excellent site with knot tying pictorials, I thought it might be a good reference.

and if you want to learn all sorts of ways to tie shoelaces try here: http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/index.htm

I'm a convert to his own knot, not bad after maybe 40 years of the same old thing.

Knots used in climbing can often be useful for other applications. e.g the double and triple fishermans which are amongst the strongest for joining 2 lengths of cord. Friction knots like the klemheist and prusik make it a doddle to repeatedly tighten up the ridge of a hoochie as it gets damp (if you don't carry elastic bungees). There are some nice pics at :

http://www.chockstone.org/TechTips.htm (scroll down for the list of knots)

The alpine butterfly is a personal favorite - a very strong knot for adding a loop partway along a cord. e.g to protect river crossings when trekking. There are a least four ways to tie it, two of these can be found on the chockstone site and another in Ray Mears Bushcraft.

Cheers Martyn - knots can be great fun, and a good way to interest the kids too. :biggthump

Absolutely Alick, figure of eight, double fishermans and butterfly are my three favourite knots. Actually, they're about the only three I can remember how to tie. :D :D

This is the version of the butterfly that I know...

/edit Oh, you can add the prusik to that also.

My favourite knot is the Monkey's Fist.

It's supposed to be used to weight the end of a line, so you can throw it (for example, from the deck of a boat to the quayside), but it makes a good knot to stop a line slipping throuw a hole (much bigger than a figure of eight).

You can tie it around a chunk of lead, or a stone, to make a doorstop.

Or make a keyring from it.

Or hit somebody with it.

Here's my favorite way to tie a hook to a line. Maybe not a 100% knot but I've been using it for 30 years and I can say it's plenty strong. The main reason I like it is because it's easy to tie. I can tie this quickly even when it's mighty cold out such as for ice fishing.

This site has some nice "how to" vids on knots from a sailing perspective.
I don't think I'll ever master the one handed bowline tho'
