I got a Bergan long back with pockets and yolk today via eBay, its my first ever army pack and its dated 1996, in "as new" condition.

First impressions :-

Its very big

Lots of straps

Not the lightest pack

Very well made.

I don't do the bushcraft many of you people do, but the ability to shed the side pouches if needed, or use them and the yolk as a day sack, seems a bonus. I'm well impressed.

I'll let you know how my 51 year old body holds up on an overnighter with the pack next week turns out, wish me luck

PS, the wife thinks I'm totaly mad

Can I ask what a yolk is? I presume it has nothing to do with chickens.

The strappy bit that makes shoulder straps. Its kind of a clip on all in one unit, that you can adjust to take either 1 or 2 of the side pouches.

It's what I use and I love it! the only negative thing I would say is that, being a bit chunky the yoke for the jet packs are a bit to tight and the belt is also a little snug.

I'm working the the 'weight issue' but I love the kit.

P.S. the missus thinks I'm barking as well.

The seller said it was in very good condition; well it has a name on it, but I doubt it has ever been used, it really is in "as new" shape, cracking deal for £55 including post

I've been using an old Karrimor Tote-Um-Delux made in the late 70's, the Bergan is like going from a mini to a range rover :)

They are fabulous bits of kit. I've had one for about 8 years now and it has really taken some hammer. It's starting to look a bit tatty now and some of the stiching is coming loose, there is also a nice little hole developing in the bottom of the main compartment. Excellent price too, i think i got mine for about that price but without the side pods that i bought from a local surplus store.

It will serve you well for many years

Having just completed my Woodlore fundamental bushcraft course i immediately drop kicked my escape 60 as a piece of junk and picked up the same as you. Having toted it up the pen-y-fan in brecon last weekend i can tell you that its a first class pack. after all you dont have to carry 120litres of kit just because you can, but its nice to know that youll run out of legs before you run out of space. Incidentall it fits my 52 year old back fine (na na na na na!!)

Nick

And yes my wife thinks im a total nutter too - great isnt it?

Hi Nick
I only live 20 miles from the Beacons, great countyside. With all the straps etc on the Bergan, I think strapping a zimmer frame to it will be a doddle in a decade or so ;)

Only problem now is that my 18 year old son wants a Bergan too

If you are talking about zimmer frames, £55 is really cheap, there are three times that in our local shop! ;)
