I'm thinking of getting one of these:

6-3/8" Folding Saw.

What do you think? If it's of the usual high Opinel standard it should be good. I want a saw thats small enough to take for walks and be good for light work; perhaps getting fuel for a Kelly Kettle.

I've been carrying one for years now. They are reasonably priced, lightweight, and excellent cutters. You can't go wrong with one.

Opinel Saws are Really good!

To save on Shipping one back across the pond, try Outdoorcode first, as I know Andrew stocks them:

Love mine - and more aesthetically pleasing than the alternatives, if that bothers you!

The Opinel range are good value, and you can modify the handles a bit too, to make them more comfortable.

Try this link as well when you're looking:-

Looks like a nifty saw.

How would it compare to an SAK saw?

Cheers,

Adam

They cut exactly the same as SAK Saws, there's just the major advantage of them being much longer.

Anyone have any experience of these versus a laplander?

There are 2 distinctly different Opinel saws.
One is comparable to a Laplander and has an 18 cm blade.
The other looks just like a normal Opinel knife when folded. This one has a 12 cm blade.

Click on “Utilitaires” then “Saw"

The new ones have a slightly different handle shape. The top of the handle at the end hasn't got the flare out, only the bottom part has.

I replied to this thread yesterday, and not find my post has disappeared!

The handle shape changed in 2005; what used to be the same as the N°12 handle (as shown in Hoodoo's picture) now looks like this:

The bigger saw looks like this:

Very intersting Keith. Is that bottom saw larger?

I bought one very similar to that bottom saw and giave it to a friend. He broke the blade the first time he used it. I've never had a problem with mine and I have two.

It looks to me like that bottom saw might be a redesign of the larger saw I bought.

Hoodoo, the Opinel saw in your picture has exactly the same handle as the N° 12 folding knife. The saw blade is 120 mm (4.3/4"), the same as the knife blade.

The new saw, which replaces this one, also has a 120mm blade. The locking ring and ferrule beneath it are the same (and may even carry the N° 12 stamp, I can't say for sure).

The other, larger model with a latch that hooks the back of the blade has a 190mm (7.1/2") blade.

I discovered the change in the handle at the Nontron show, in 2005, where I snapped up the last few for sale at the Opinel stand. Then I got the last two from Courty's shop in Paris just before coming over to the US.

I don't like the new shape.

Here's a photo of what I think must be the old version of that larger saw you posted.

Yep that is the older version, I have one and they compare very well against the laplander (I actually think they are better, but that is just me).
