Firelighting with bread???

Saw this done once when I was a teenager, Guy had half a really stale wheaten bap, pulled out the middle, poured something on it (wouldn't say what - showing off). He then rolled the doughy stuff round some dry grass and kept rolling it in his hands. After some time, quite some time if I remember, there was smoke and a strong smell of yeasty bread, he split the dough ball and blew/fanned the tinder to light.

Two questions... Anyone else seen it done? & What was it he poured on the bread?

Was it a powder or a liquid he poured on the bap dough?

I wonder if it's the old pot. perm. + sugar or pot. perm. + anti-freeze trick?

It wasn't liquid. Don't think it was PP & sugar, his demonstration was a reaction to being shown that in action.
