View Full Version : Midgie net vs mosquito net
I was looking at one of those over bed mosquito nets intended for tropical use the other day and it occured to me that there was no way that that size of mesh would keep out the infamous culcoides impunctatus...The Midge :(
I have seven assorted varieties of tent in the house and only one has a fine enough insect screen to keep out the plague, and I had thought that this might be a good way to fix the ones I use and make them secure. Having a re think.
Are the commercially available meshes for hammocks midgie proof or just mozzie proof?

use FIRE and plenty of it! :lmao:
but seriously, midges climbed through a head net i wore in scotland!
standard mesh on tents seem to work fine, as for using just a net/tarp i would go for a further bivi bag option (just don't let the buggers in!).
i would cover up as much as possible and DEET everything else in sight, get some citronella candles going and pray for cold windy weather!
otherwise just don't go, it'll drive you mad :red: !
as an idea to research midges seemed to attack certain people in my party, prehaps a diet thing?
A bit off topic, but I make up my own repellent using citronella works really well on me and my horse
:(Bad news however the EU have decided to ban the use of icitronella in repellents as from September this year:confused: (anyone know why)
Determined little blighters aren't they?
I've acquired some very, very fine green linen that seems to work quite well as a shemagh and stops them getting at my scalp, face and neck, but I don't think I could sleep with it wrapped around my face. That's why I was wondering about fixing the tents properly, or at least creating an inner midgie net for over my bag. I don't like Citronella or deet, but I washed my scarf in bog myrtle and it really does seem to deter them.

Hi Redflex,
It's the pressure from the chemical giants that's causing it. Even using Lavender and tea tree is going to be under threat shortly.
Tony Burfield is trying hard to keep things moving, have a look at this site for more details.

A big midgie net tipi would be a fine thing.
Goose has a silk(?) tipi that looks brilliant. Toss a rope over a tree and retire to a midgie-free zone until they calm down. The same thing in netting would be as good but with a view :).
Toddy............Have you read this book about the miggies

Tis a good read.............Jon
I have a cunning plan ;) I would love to come to Loch Achray, but I get eaten alive there :( So I was thinking about joining a wheen of those over bed mozzie nets together to create a drape all around the edges of a parachute so folks could sit and chat/ work unassailed by the little bu**ers but still see and be part of the whole thing without choking on citronella, etc. However, the mesh is just too big, so I was wondering about the hammock nets, but it's going to get too expensive. I can buy anti midgie net but the cost is just not on for this much of it.
I didn't fancy white stuff much but I reckon I could make up a black bin load of bog myrtle dye and soak the white net in that until the meet up. Ought to give me a soft moss green coloured netting.
Doesn't look like the idea is going to work out though :(

Uhuh :D son1 bought it for me. It's actually full of good information, but the reality of the horrors biting me and the subsequent allergic reaction is just not funny :( There are areas I avoid 'cos I know I'm sooooo going to suffer.

I get bitten my the miggies a lot and ok they are not culicoides impunctatos, they do bite a goodun on overcast, windless days while I am working. I do find that the first time I get bitten, I will itchy and scratchy for days after, but after that I seem to get immune to the itchyness of the bite and towards the end of their season, they don't bother me, apart from the annoyance of them round me. Have you found this at all ?.......................Jon

I have a cunning plan ;)
As cunning as a midgie?
Hassle Magikelly enough and he'll fold, we'll have group--buy midgie rooms before the season's over ;) .

Oh, I wish :( No, it just gets worse and worse and the bites take longer to clear, until my Doc starts worrying about the fluttering heart thingie and feeds me more anti-histamines. Midgies are bad, but clegs are a nightmare :cussing:
On the west coast off shore is the only way to go; I know why folks used to live in Crannogs too, it wasn't just status and defence against attack, even the deer go swimming to get away from the midgies.

Now that's a good idea :D Wonder if we could have them made so that they joined together to create a midge free zone too? A bit like those German army ponchos that each man carries to make a bit of the communal tent sort of thing.

Hi Toddy
Have a look at this http://www.backcountry.com/store/GOL0084/GoLite-Hex-3-Nest-Inner-Tent-3-Person.html?mv_pc=r126&CP=Froogle&CMP=SPC-Froogle&ATT=052506&GCID=C2000x025&keyword=hex+3+nest+inner+tent+ 3+person+
It's the "nest" for a golite hex tipi. It's obviously too large to put up under a basha - but something like that would make a pretty good midge proof shelter for about six or so people sitting around. It sleeps three I think.
No-see-um netting is what you're looking for to make midge netting out of - it's the only stuff fine enough to keep the bu99ers out.
