View Full Version : 1hr Fire steel fix!!
You have seen my knife (Below) in another thread
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a318/DavidCribb/fh01.jpg
but for some reason I decided to make it without a fire steel holder, but now wish I had added one so instead of making a new sheath I tryed to think of a way to add one, and here it is!
A piece of 3mm veg tan leather (The same as the sheath folded and sewn to accept a fire steel, with another row of stitshing the width of the sheath away from the first and a 3rd row about 5mm away from that to form a sleave (Clear as mud)
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a318/DavidCribb/fh02.jpg
This then slots through the neck sheath cut out

And is held in place (through the sleave) with a bone pin
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a318/DavidCribb/fh04.jpg
Et Voila! (SP) a quick fix fire steel holder! (All in 60mins)

It is worthy of note my sheath also has a belt loop at the back!

LOL cheers mate!
Pignut, can you post a link to the thread regarding your knife :)
Hi Pignut,
I share Topcat’s sentiments! – It is lovely.
But how difficult is it to do. I’d love to have a go, but I’m sure I would buy all the kit and then lose all my fingers and get in a huff.
I’ve designed (in paper) a sheath for my axe that I’d like to make, but I think I’ve decided it’s beyond me – advise, if you’ve got the time, please.

All I used for the sheath was a craft knife stitch marker, glue, thread and needles
I simply drew around the knife on a piece of paper added an inch all round, cut it out fitted it round the knife.
Once I was happy i drew round the paper template onto a piece of leather and cut it out,
Then pretty much followed RB's tutorial,
So long as you check everything and take your time there is no great skill needed
Pignut,
Thats very nice work mate :D

Very nice Pignut,
I started to wonder what else could go in place of the bone pin, but it's an "as elegant" a solution as any.

Quick and easy Pignut, a very good idea, I may have to pinch it at some time:D

Feel free thats what it is on here for ;)
is a great idea pignut! , is a good job you put a belt slot and loop on the origional sheath.
using this method you could add all sorts of removable additions to things (can't think of what things at the moment though.......)
would also make an interesting way of adding removable pouches / loops etc to a belt. That way you wouldn't habe to remove the belt to remove the item.
Hmmmmmmm - mind running riot now! - can see torch holders etc

True enough, I guess as you say you could add just about anything
Pignut, are you quite that that's a bone pin? From where I'm sitting, it looks suspiciously like an SAK toothpick. You wouldn't be fibbing to us about this, would you?
hehehe

If that's a SAK tooth pic how big's the SAK it goes in and who's it for they'd have to have a massive mouth.;)

Uhhh...Mick Jagger? He's got a pretty big mouth. And big lips.

:lmao: If it was from a SAK I would guess it to be about a foot long!!!
who would need a sheath knife with That!!!!!!! :lmao:
That's great work mate! But I still question the logic behind risking a vital piece of kit such as a Firelighting Steel to wet weather, loss, damage, corrosion etc by leaving it nakedly exposed on a knife sheath? My steels go in my pocket, a pouch or around my neck on a lanyard.
It is used often so corrosion is not a problem, and unless it is exposed to salt water it does not seem to be affected by being wet, the firestick is also now attached with a lanyard to prevent loss.
Also as with all vital kit, I carry a spare
