convexing a spyderco uk pen

I would like to convex my spyderco uk pen knife using a hodo hone. However the knife blade is cpms30v which is apparently very wear resistant, do you think this is possible with hand tools? Alternately does anyone Know if someone who can do it for a reasonable fee?(this is my prefered option since I have images of myself hunched over the stone fed up ,many hours since I started and having got nowhere )

I assume you just want to convex the edge? So its flat with say a 4mm convex edge? While it should be possible on a Hoodoo type hone, I would start the process with either a hard backing, or with a coarse sharpening stone. Wile the S30V is abrasion resistant, its not that bad, and its not like you need to take a lot of metal off.

I would offer, either with hand stones, or on a belt grinder, but the latter is still in bits awaiting assembly :rolleyes: . Maybe someone on British Blades could do it fairly fast.

My suggestion is to just start with the hoodoo hone and sharpen. The next time it will be a little closer to convexed, the next time a little closer. Eventually, the edge will be totally convexed without power tools that can ruin a blade in an instant and without spending hours with hand tools. If you want more of the blade than just the edge convexed, just hold the back of the blade closer to the hone surface. I've done this with a Spyderco paramilitary, a fallkniven U2, an Al Mar Hawk, a couple of Doziers, and several SAKs.

I'd start off with a flat course stone or hard backed abrasive paper and put another bevel in in a mid way angle between the primary grind and the edge bevel. with 220grit it souldn't take too long. Then you can just blend it in with a hoodoo hone.
On a kukri I had to put a few angles in with a file to and then went through the grits with a hoodoo hone and that didn't take too long so a UKPK sohuld be fine

I think it depends on if you want to thin the edge as well. I usually use a diamond stone to knock the the top corner off the bevel, then convex and smooth the bevel with the mousepad/paper combo. If you start with that, you will most likely round both the edge and the top part of the bevel. This actually makes for a strong edge but it all depends on how strong you want to leave it at the edge.

Thanks for your replies :) I read through them all carefully. My main reason for wanting to convex the knife was to increase cutting ability which while high was behind my mora hunter, would a full convex be the best choice to raise its cutting ability?

with a fairly deep blade coupled with the relitively thin stock the UKPK is made from (the f1 is the same depth but the bladestock is 50%thicker) the difference between a full convex and a flat grind with a convex edge is so small it doesn't matter

If the differences are that small I’ll just convex the edge.
