In Woodcraft and camping by Nessmuk he talks of a bullet mould. Does such a thing still exist and would I be able to improvise one for air rifle pellets as they are very soft?

HI Ralph,
I suspect that the bullet moulds mentioned by Nessmuk were for round shot, as used by muzzle loaded powder burner muskets. While they surely still exist, to adapt one for sub 12 foot-pound airr*fle pellets would be difficult. A few grains over-weight would put your muzzle energy into firearms teritory, and cause huge problems with shot-to-shot accuracy.

However if you want a gawp at some beautiful examples of Air r*fles with bullet moulds and sizing dies, go to www.Barnespneumatic.com click on the round mirror at the bottom of the page  look for the grid of Web movies - what engineering!

I know several people who make their own bullets either by swaging or moulding. However, this is for .357-.44 cal and can represent a significant saving (financial- not time!) over commercial bullets. The shape of airgun pellets is somewhat more complex (skirt, hollow-base, ribbing) and the cost of commercial airgun pellets is comparitively much less than firearm calibres, so the benefit may be minimal.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't try it, though!

I sometimes use Eley bullet-heads in an FAC air-rifle: they are a much easier shape to produce but are very heavy for a sub12ftlbs rifle. You could use them as a template for a mold. They used to be available from Daystate (Stone, Staffordshire)

Good luck!
