Jack,

A landy is an axe for reducing the size of your bank account - while putting a big grin on your face!

Hope the above helps,

Dave

P.S. - I've ditched my Bulldog billhook!

Ain't that the truth :-D

otally off topic but it reminds me of an interview I once saw. I think it was Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits who had taken up Offshore sailing. When he was asked what it was like he said the nearest he could describe it, was to stand under a freezing cold shower and throw £50 notes away !! :rolmao:

I got one this morning. I had to get one really, the head finaly flew off my hatchet last week, so I have been stuck using a felling axe for everything, untill today!

So I unwrapped it, sat straight down by the fireplace and started to chop some kindling, on about the 3rd stroke, the mrs pushed past me and I chopped a nice chunk of concrete from the fire surround.
My axe edge now looks more like a saw blade!

As an owner I can confirm that a landrover is a car that can't keep water out or oil in.

Sounds like a quick introduction to major axe sharpening skills to me

Haha yup, I was kicking myself all day! It's alot of steel to take off by hand. A right royal pain in the bum.
I gave it an aggressive sharpen with a diamond stone. So it works again. But I want to buy a strop or somthing similar, to get back the nicely convex polished edge. Any suggestions?

strop sugestions:
use a mouse mat, soft side up for axes, place a piece of cornflake box rough side up on top. put on some autosol (metal polish from halfords) by way of a lapping paste. you'll have a gleaming polished edge in next to no time. you can use t-cut scratch remover or similar as a polishing compound, but the autosol is quicker.

cheers, and.

Cheers mate!
I'll go buy some autosol next week. How abarisve is the autosol/cardboard? Enough to covex a knife blade from scratch?

if you're looking into reprofiling the head you'd be better served by investing in a pack of mixed grits of wet'n'dry (also from halfords) and using them instead of the cornflake box. when you've worked upto 1200 grit, move onto the polish. i still wouldn't want to attempt shaving with the axe for a razor, but you will be able to use the final bevel as a mirror 8-)

ok, i just re-read the last question.

i usually use the mousemat hard side up under the strop for for knives, or just use the back of an A4 pad. if you have a scandi ground knife it'll give it a gentle convex. and if you already havea convex edge it'll work fine. if you have a knife with a large secondary bevel you'll probably want to "knock the shoulders off" with a bit of wet'n'dry first. that is to blend in the angle between the top of the bevel and the side of the knife.

cheers, and.

Thankyou for that! :)
I'll make a trip to halfords ASAP. Sharpening has never been a strong point of mine; I’m not so great with angles. So anything that makes it easier is gold dust! :)

I gave my SFA a proper working today. A tree had fallen into the river in my field. It was obscuring a good fishing spot, so it had to go!
It would normally be a job for a chainsaw, but given that I had to balance on the trunk in the river, I could only do it one handed. The axe did its job fantastically. Enough weight to get through the 8” diameter limbs with relative ease. The handle was quite slippery, so I made a lanyard, which helped, but I might look into checkering the handle in the future. Thinking about it, I do, do a lot of concreting which makes ones hands very smooth, so it could just be me?
