finally plucked up the courage to order a load of stuff from duluthpack... not cheap but i'm really looking forward to getting it all...
I ordered...
http://www.duluthpack.com/product_images/s120-photo.jpg Rambler daysack for weekends away.
http://www.duluthpack.com/product_images/m121-photo.jpg Nice thermos thingy for when I haven't got a base camp with tripod 'n' kettle
http://www.duluthpack.com/product_images/m400-photo.jpg A nice leather journal to document my stools... or something... to be honest, this was an impulse purchase.
http://www.duluthpack.com/product_images/b200-photo.jpg A long bedroll because I saw one a little while ago and they're awesome.
postage is stiff - the cheapest option taking possibly a few weeks and costing just over $75 and i'm sure the tax man will also get his pound of flesh... it sucks but i'm looking forward to getting it all.

Squidders, you weren't involved in that 」50million back job
But the gear looks great. :D Would be interested on a review on the bed roll.

Well, the bedroll is quite simply brilliant! I have had a really good look at one in use and they're built like an outhouse.
They take a standard therm-a-rest in a big pocket and you can also stuff clothes in the top to make a pillow. The zips are chunky and the whole thing rolls up nice to keep everything safe on the outside of your bag.
Basically, it's not the lightest but it seems to be awesomely durable and it won't burst in to flames at the first sign of a spark from a fire.
The whole thing is VERY well made and the cotton-canvas looks built to be handed down atleast 2 generations.
edit:- I stole nothing... you try and prove it :lmao:

I bit the bullet and bought the Rambler. I love it. It is a good bit bigger than I originally thought, but great workmanship and materials. I am sure it will last for donkeys years.
It would be good to hear what you think of the bedroll once you get a chance to use it. I think there is a mini-review of one on "song of the paddle."

You might want to get a tump.
I have a friend, Eli Boudrey, who does not use a pack. He rolls up all his gear in a bedroll, along with a tumpline, and carrys the gear that way.
The Duluth Pack equipment, at least the pack and bedroll, should last you a long time. I have heard from someone who is coming over from England in August. Unknown whether they would be able to haul your stuff back however, and that would be a long time to wait.

PG: Thanks for the kind offer but you know how it is when you order something... even if you wait six months to order it, once the deed is done you (well, I do anyway) want it asap.
Hoodo: I'll certainly write something up when I get a chance to use it in the field. I'll try not to overlap with the good review by Martin (who's bedroll it was that I saw in the first place).
Martin: Thanks for adding some weight to my praise of your bedroll... I like your review... that and seeing it convinced me I should buy one in the end.

Yo, Squidders: Lovely stuff! Frankly, I'm a bit jealous. I can't count the number of times I've looked longingly at the Duluth Pack Catalog. Good choices all 'round on your part. I'd thought about the Rambler daypack but was going to get the "Sparky Bag" instead. As it all came out, I couldn't justify the price on my budget and went for a Swiss Army salt & pepper canvas/leather rucksack instead. It's rock solid and soooo well made. Set me back a whopping $25 U.S. Still like to look at the Duluth catalog. Perhaps I'll make the jump one day......
Best Wishes,
Bruce

mr squidders, you are a very very bad man. i left my credit card at home this morning so i wouldn't be tempted to order anything while at work !
i'm looking forward to a review of the rambler pack.. I really like this kind of pack, but have been unable to find anything of decent quality around the shops here.

Prolly come in at about 10 kilo's but very comfy & cosy if weight isnt an issue.

They are generally well thought of around here. Want me to go shake their tree? Their operation is about 20 miles from where I live, and I need to buy some rivets anyway. PM me if you'd like.

*AND* a blanket?!? i'm not made of money :lmao:
Excellent choices.
I asked for and was lucky enough to receive a Duluth Pack Rambler Pack AND a Duluth Pack Deluxe Shell Bag 200. Both in Green Canvas with Brown Leather. I was VERY happy boy on Christmas Morning. My in-laws kick ***.
I thought long and hard about ordering the bed-roll for my birthday, but have yet to bite the bullet on that one.
I hope you enjoy your new kit when it arrives. I love my pack. Large enough to carry extra gear when needed, but can carry much less if desired.
I just wish the Rambler had leather straps on the bottom so I could strap the bed-roll right to the bottom and not have to either tuck it under the lid or try to stuff it inside when I get one.

If anyone is interested in Duluth kit, it might be better off if you order it through www.tamarackoutdoors.co.uk . They are the UK supplier and it might (just might, they are ludicrously expensive....) be cheaper than ordering from the U.S. once you consider shipping and import duty.
And no, I don't work for them. (But if they want to offer me a job, I'm more than willing :D ......)

Hi Jake,
I did speak to Tamarack who said they weren't going to be stocking the duluth stuff any more as the shipping put the price up too much and it took too long to arrive.
Nevermind eh.

Bystander,
I ordered up one of the folding stoves right after Christmas, and all I can say is that it works wonderfully. It gets VERY hot fast. I like that if there is downed wood in your area, you can easily have a hot little fire to brew up a cup of tea while on a day hike. This little stove sits in the bottom of my Duluth pack waiting for this weekend's outing.

Watch out Squidders, not only will you have to pay duty to the customs people but Parclforce will insist on an 'administrative' charge for the the inconvenience of not delivering the goods to your door but forcing you to come and pay the duty at their depot first...

Not often, surprisingly.

That's the best way IMO. The post office charge less for handling and quite often you don't get charged at all (they do seem to have got their act together a little so you don't get away with it as much as you used to.

I asked the good people at Duluthpack to write "returned after repair" on the items. This means that I have already purchased them, paid the import duty and returned them to Duluth for repair - I can't pay duty twice on the same item that I own already now can I?

A good one if they'll do it. Another one is "gift, value less than $50." ;)

Sometimes there are Duluth Packs on e-bay. They usually go for higher prices than they ought to. I just purchased a #3 at a local antique store for $18. They had two more, but not in as good a shape.
The leather straps were rigid, but not cracked. A week of rubbing the straps with neetsfoot oil every night, and it is good as new. Canvas is good, but a little dirty. No rips, couple of small holes. Darned them up. A man can't have too many Duluth packs.
Here's the real deal, an old Monarch (Duluth pack's trade name):

Parcelfarce the stupid :censored: :censored: sent me a bill for the import duty on my Duluth packs. Grudgingly I went along to pay it. I was already :censored: off as the value of VAT charged appears to indicate that the :censored: at Duluth have declared a value 50% higher than I paid for the packs  . Anyway I want the packs for this weekend so I will pay the :censored:ing bill and argue afterward.
So when I get to the Parcelfarce depot the knuckle dragging :censored: there inform me that the import bills are now handled centrally from Coventry. Of course the :censored: at Coventry have sent the bill out two days ago but it appears to have slipped their tiny :censored:ing minds to sent the parcel up.
So I have the bill and the parcel is at the other end of the country. I may be able to get on Monday but that is based on them being less :censored:ing stupid over the next day or so.
You may have noticed I am a tad upset about this as I spent last night looking forward to getting the packs to play with. I am now of to email Duluth to find out what in earth made them decide to over declare the value of the packs.
Its like when I ordered my Grohmann knives from canada, there was the usual duty VAT etc but when you took those into account there was an extra 」13 I had been charged. Now according to the customs site this is the fee they pay parcelforce to open check and reseal the parcel more fequent since 9/11. Funny thing was knife zone the suppliers had taped up the carton with security overprinted tape that was unbroken so obviously it had only been X-rayed at best yet your still charged for opening and re sealing.
Dave.

Just had a call from Parelfarce. Turns out my stuff is in Glasgow. When it arrived the Glasgow depot noticed my invoice was too high. It was corrected and a new one created. So my parcel was now under the reference of the new letter I had not received rather than the one I have received.
So the good news is I am off to collect my parcel and Duluth did nit over declare the value. Off to the depot now.

Duluth stuff looks perfect, i reckon there's a real beauty in (and a sad lack of) things that are designed and made to work well, are easy to maintain and meant to last a lifetime. How much did the shipping and charges etc. come to for your packs MagiKelly? Does anyone know if i'd still get stung for all the extra import duties and charges if i managed to get hold of some old and obviously used ones?
MagiKelly
17-03-2006, 14:30
Shipping and handling was $44. Yes you are still liable for VAT on used goods.
Have now collected the packs and had a look. They certainly are bomb proof and the number 4 pack is enormous.
Not sure about the poly liners I will probably try to get dry bags / pack liners of an appropriate size. Once I have had time to use them I will be doing a review over on SotP and probably post it here as well.

Don't know. I had no tracking number or anything so the first I knew was when the invoice for the Tax arrived. I have purchased from Duluth twice now and have never received confirmation that my order has been received or that it was on its way.

Well, the tax man took his 」67 on top of the actual costs so well done him, I知 sure he's going to sleep well tonight knowing he's earned his money... f*c*ing b*s*ard!
I got the good folks at Duluth to write "Returned from repair" on the box but they didn't twig that it should also go on the customs declaration slip... Americans - bless 'em. It's not their fault, I shouldn't have to try and think of interesting ways to dodge even more tax than I pay.
Anyway... this is a little embarrassing... talk about big! The pack is HUGE - well for a day sack it is anyway... and the bedroll takes my base camp XL therm-a-rest with room to spare.
That's it, I知 done with this packing light nonsense, the stuff I got feels like it's going to get better and better through each generation it gets handed down through and I think this is going to be the start of a beautiful relationship ;)
So, I知 going testing it out this weekend in the woods so i'll try and get a few pics and write something a little more informative than this quick note.
I'll leave you with something thought provoking... "YAY - NEW KIT!!!" :lmao:

Sorry ib, I have been off line for a bit in the middle of a job search.
I carry a MSR Stowaway 1100 ml pot. Holds 3 cups of water for the boil. Handle locks down to keep the lid in place, and when you are transporting it, you can keep your tea, spoon, snacks what ever inside and safe.
I'll take a couple of pictures tonight when I get home and show the set-up.
The thing I like about the pot is the integral handle that stays cool and away from the fire as well as locking down the lid.
The magic-flame stove fire can lick up around the pot, so I am glad I wasn't using a traditional "billy" with fold over handle that could get hot in the flames.

Jamesdevine, bothman: both of those look good... Obviously I have no clue about the quality of them... they could even be superior to the duluthpack ones and they're certainly cheaper.
I did see a handfull of other makers of similar stuff but figured as shipping costs will be high from the US anyway and I have read very good things about duluthpack, I would go with what is known.
The price is high but at this stage, I think, worth it... i'll let you know after the weekend though ;)
