I got one with my Eco Sleep System and it works great for that and is very well made .
I wouldn't try and get two under it to sleep I did consider it but when we tried we were a bit close together and to the edges, we decided we might get a bit wet so up went another tarp.
I think you could get 3 sitting under it with no problem.
I wanted another so I could popper them together to get more cover but I got a 3m by 3m Tatonka in a group buy for far less than an Woodlore, it's great you could easily get 2 to sleep under that and I think this will be my permanent tarp now.
Worth £50 IMO no i don't think so there are other tarps that are better value for money but if you want the nice cammo one that’s an official Woodlore then you makes your choice you pays your money just like I did when I didn't know any better

Hope this all helps

James

i've got an aussie hootchie myself and must say theyre worth the 50 quid. i didnt get it of woodlore (they were out of stock) but bearclaw i think. all in all a top bit of kit. compared to the uk version (hawthorn's) and german issue (yarrow's) i'd take the aus version any day. bit heavier and larger when packed, but very well made and solid. the german on is ok, but i wouldnt trust the brit one (sorry hawthorn, i know you love yours) as i like my kit robust. chain is only as strong as the weakest link n'll that.

as for sleeping two, yup, if your both very good friends! wouldnt have a problem with a partner but it would have to be a dire situation before i'd share it with a friend :lmao: . having it set up as a "living room" area would also work, we had 4 under the german one last year and it was cosy but do able and the aussie is bigger.

hope that helps, rob

No and no, in my opinion.

Buy a bigger one from outdoorcode :D (no I'm just a customer)

The 3x3 Tatonka ones are sub 40 quid and twice the area of a hoochie (twice the bulk and weight, natch, but that's low anyway.

HTH,

Jim.

having looked at the gunuine issue Aus hootchies and the hootchies sold by woodlore I think I am correct in saying that the woodlore hootchies are not genuine australian issue but copies of the australian issue ones.

it is possible that I am wrong, but a quick call to woodlore would confirm if you were intrested

Same as Jim no & no,

The RM hootchie is a good bit of kit but not worth the cost, it is nice and light if you’re going to be counting the grams.

Go for theTatonka tarp 2 3x3 once its up you'll be amazed at much room there is underneath it.

This group buy has finished.

Ed, the crucial question here is are you planning to sleep on the ground or in a hammock?

Kathmandu used to claim that the smallest reliably dry basha is 2.5m by 1.5m. I have one and it will keep you dry no problem when sleeping on the ground. Indeed, I am sure it is bigger than the 58 pattern ponch I used before.

For hammock use, a 2.5m long tarp is probably suboptimal if there is significant wind as well as rain. Certainly there are reports in the archives of people getting wet. The aussi hootchie I think is 2.8m long.

The 3m x3m would be a safer bet for hammock use, and you could even rig it along the diagonal for longer length.

Weights: the 2.5x1.5 Kathmandu is only 300g, the Tatonka is I think 800-900g?

mine's a propper issue aus one, not a woodlore job. i got it from bearclaw bushcraft, i think. it still cost 50 GBP but worth every penny if you ask me. i've seen some of the other hootchies and they arent made anywhere as well made - you get what you pay for.

i've slept on it and under it, used it as a ground sheet in the tipi and now its packing up nice n small is always in my kit when i go anywhere.

Thats exactly the way i understand it to be Stuart but to find out for sure would be a good idea. :)

IIRC Woodlore used to sell their Hoochies as genuine Aussie army and advertised them as such, now advertised as Australian Hootchie, I dont know if the one I bought off them about 4 years ago is genuine or not, I'm not really bothered as I can say its been through all the British weather can throw at it in every season and not let me down yet, thats all I ask and it fulfills that and is still in very good nick.
