Thats only an option if it snows a decent amount but thank you John.
It'll be mostly deciduous ancient woodland in England (should o mentioned that in first post)

given the above specs I'd suggest the "Debris Shelter".

Heres one built by students on one of my last Forestry Commission courses:









If theres snow on the ground, just scoop it out of the way then start to build.

]'\am, it all depends on how many resources you have to use, if its limited then the debris shelter is your best option, remember if you make an open front shelter long fires use tons of wood, believe me you will be very surprised how much it will take to keep you warm enough all night.

if you have plenty of wood to use i would make a double lean to shelter, block up 1 end and have them about 1 foot apart, this turns it into a basic cave and catches the heat from a small fire that you can have inside so reduces the need for as much wood.
