Some of you have met my grandson Cameron up at Loch Achray. You know how he loves his fishing.
He had a good time this morning. :D

The big one is a three and a half pounder.

The boy's a happy chappie.

Good lad!
He sure knows his stuff.

What method did he use?

Rod, line and power bait. Those little foam rubber fluorescent squidgy balls that you put the hook through and can use over and over again. The trout just go mad for them. You pop a small piece of shot about a foot up the line and cast. The shot sits on the bottom and the bait floats up, so it's sitting about a foot off the bottom. The rod sits on a rest, line pulled down from the reel and hooked over a small pencil float on the deck. When there's a bite, the float shoots up and you strike. In each case the bait was completely swallowed. Power bait - fantastic stuff.

Lots of Americans use that stuff.
Not many people in the UK though.
Seems your grandson is a trend setter.
I might have to get a tub of it myself!
I'm going fishing tomorrow, if there are no storms.
There's a little river with carp in it.
Was going to freeline bread on my ultralight spin outfit.
Should be a blast.
Tell your lad to keep it up!!!

Hi Eric,

I went to my local river today.
I used my ultra light spinning rod and a single size 4 hook.
I fed with bread and then free lined a large flake close in.
I caught 3 carp over a couple of hours.
I missed a couple of bites and got broken off by a whopper.
The carp were between 4-10lb in weight, all returned of course.
I also saw loads of terrapins.
They were even eating a small (foot long) dead carp.
(Nothing to do with me)
They were eating its gills out!
Every time I got close to take a picture they shot off.
They can swim really fast!

Your grandson should keep going, he has skill.
All the best, JC.

There's something magical about fishing,
especially when you're a boy.

Creeping about, observing the water, trying to fool the wild thing.
You see lots of things, that people just walk past.
It clears the mind and feeds the soul.
Unlike any other "blood sport" we have the choice to release our
animal to live another day (mostly:( ).

I think it can be a good basis for "bushcrafting".

I don't want to hijack this thread,
because it was about a young lad enjoying his fishing,
So I'll stop now.

I wish more people could experience what Eric's grandson does.
