I have a flint and steel, a firesteel, waterproof matches and a bic in my pack. If I'm all relaxed and I'm having fun I'll break out the strike-a-light and charcloth. If I'm wet, grumpy and cold the Bic comes out straight away, I'm not ashamed!

I've processed mine now, the Amadou is just drying. I fluffed some up (it was still quite damp) and it caught a spark from a ferro rod, so it looks pretty useful! I've kept the spore-tube bits for an ember-catcher.

Thanks! I've got the trama on the boil now. I'm going to leave it for a few hours, then let it cool and give it a go at teasing it out. I've got some Saltpetre from a meat curing project a few months ago, but I decided not to cheat.

The Trama looks right, and it's got the spore tubes... but the shell looks very different. Hmmm.

I think I mght give it a go, though boiling something for 24 hours seems like a it of a chore. Mind you, if it means it'll take a spark from my steel, it might be worth it. Plus, of course, it'll be a great learning experience.

Golden Syrup - my downfall! I use an altoids tin with a 1-2mm hole in the top. You can't do much at once, but it isn't too great a hardship in winter to sit by the fire and make charcloth. :)

I'd second Denim. An old pair of jeans made me month's worth of charcloth.

I'm going to try this as I get devoured by bitey insects every year. I'll see if I can dig the photos out from when I got bitten to baggery camping at Cannock Chase and got chased into my tent. I looked like I had the measles :D

I don't want to derail the thread but I don't think it's worth posting a new topic for this - does anyone have a poncho tarp, and if so, does anyone know what the line through two eyelets by the hood is for? It's offset so it can't be for the ridge line. I just tend to sling it over a paracord...
