    Sorry but stout boots are a must, hiking shoes/trainers dont work. You are going over a LOT of uneven ground , rubble etc with a lot of debris, the boots will protect your feet and help stop you turning an ankle.     Just out of curiosity.............

    Rescue teams responding to disasters all over the world are specifically told NOT to wear or bring anything "military" in case they are mistaken for mercenaries etc and shot at. In countries with unstable governments or dictatorships this is a very real reality and danger.
