Likewise with GGTBod - just switched from tents to DD travel hammock and tarp - really versatile and fairly lightweight if you use the whoopee slings and paracord instead of webbing and bungees for setup. The hammock can be set up as a decent sized bivvy and if you have a 3x3 tarp you can...
I have a DD underblanket and used it a few months ago at -1 degrees in a DD travel hammock. With closed cell foam mat and a zero degree rated synthetic bag - was warm enough for me. I guess it all depends what the rest of your sleep system is and how light you want to travel!
It's so personal/subjective but I have used Ray Mear's 'Outdoor survival handbook', and 'Bushcraft'. Also the Collins Gem SAS survival handbook (for portability) and Richard Mabey's 'Food for free' are useful.
