There is no way simply smoking your hides will make them come out good. Actually smoking them before they are softened can make them very hard to soften.
I always do braintan, with some veg tan into the mix. If you are in for the easier options I would think alum would work well.
Salt makes furs permanently more prone to attracting moisture in my experience.
Some guys I met once, softened reindeer hides with used motor oil. Must smell pretty bad.
These skis were made about a year ago. They work quite well. There is too much writing to post everything here, so I'll add a link to the original post.
Any questions are welcomed.

Copied from my site:
This area being characterized by very steep terrain, Canadian snowshoes are sometimes of limited usability, same with skis. The traditional snowshoes of Norway were usually made with a juniper frame and birch withies as webbing. They don’t float nearly as well on...
Thanks guys, I'll continue to post stuff when I make it or find it in my stash pile. :-p
I agree with you on the natural fibers thing. Another great advantage is that it is easy to do field repairs on such clothing.

I hope you understand the drawing...
1. The triangular part of the gusset is sewn onto the lower end of the boot top. The remaining part of the boot top is sewn closed.
2. The boot sole is as you can see quite large and has to be puckered all the way around the sole. Start at the front and...
Glad you guys liked it.

Before I turned the parka hair out it was way too warm for most temperatures. With the hair out it's warm enough on it's own down to about minus 5C without anything underneath, provided you are walking. With some buckskin or other clothing underneath you can...
Thought I'd share some developments on my full winter clothing.
I found I very rarely would need two layers of reindeer fur, so I decided to turn my inner coat into an outer coat. Very few modifications were made, but a collar with the fur turning inward were added around the neck to reduce...
I used to use the otter board a lot. As far as I know you need the permission of the landowner to use it, but that may vary from place to place. You can use it both from land and from a boat or canoe (with another person rowing/paddeling). The latter is quite a bit easier, especially if there is...
Instructional video for you who've always wanted to try it. I'm aware that some parts might be a bit unclear. Please ask me to clarify. :-)

Thank you for the suggestion. These cameras definitively looks like they might be an excellent choice.
I wasn't too impressed by the battery life though. I suppose I'd just have to bring a lot of batteries if I was to film every day on longer trips.
I'm considering starting to film some of my expeditions and for that I need to buy a new camera. Do any of you have any ideas what kind of cameras are good for cold weather filming, with high battery capacity as well as having a pretty good video quality? Preferably not too heavy either.
I'd...
